ive mentioned the calibra turbo 4x4 as i used to have one but he also likes the look of the front wheel rover 220 turbo

Haven't read the thread but I can think of 20 better cars to own in this price range.

Cally is utter shite, the chasis is fine, the gearbox is good and the handling is not bad, but they are rust buckets and the engine isn't all that strong, neither is the transfer box. They die just by looking at boost.

The tom cat is ok, but poor chasis means big wheel spin, not much power to the road, and sloppy handling. They also leak oil and burn oil like a diesel.

Just my 2p and I have driven and known both cars before.

Cheers!

Sorry, I'd sooner have have a Calibra Turbo than a Fiat Coupe....about as reliable as a politician's word and no quicker than Calibras.

2 friends of mine have them. a 20V T and a 16v T. Whilst being reasonable cars, between them, they've gotten through 8 engines....which I swear are made from chocolate.

Imprezza is more of a chav wagon than Cavalibras, although have far superior mechanicals.

I have never and well never see people's fascination for the S13. They are more bland than Toyota Paseos. Although I guess it's their cheap drift wagon status that gives them their appeal.

S13's are the best 200 IMHO I've owned a S13 pre face lift and face lift and an s14. But this one was the nicest of the bunch (although a little ott for my taste these days).

Cheers!

Calibra vs 220 coupe =

Same crud, different wrapper.

Gutless engines, faggott wheel drive (front or 4), derived from economy white goods that happened to have 4 wheels.

The only people who spend a the vast amount of income on these cars are out-and-out Vauxhall enthusiasts. The badge/brand defies logic with these kind of chaps.

ffs both cars are shit.

LOL :D

Yep!

WTF? Are you 'avin' a bubble or what? PMSLMFAO :D

ok how about vw carrodo g60/vr6,sunny gtir 2.0 4+4 turbo ive had both before zed and imo great cars all round.

calibra every time

it's a good car, can get up to 300hp without too much cash, still look modern, and come with all the toys.

transfer boxes are a common failure, sure, but all cars have their weaknesses. It's not the end of the world and the car can still be driven even if it's dead.

the rust issue only affects the earlier cars, after mid 94 the lower half was galvenised which mostly removed the problem, on earlier cars it's easy enough to sort anyhow, if it hasnt been already.

they are very cheap to maintain, easy to get parts for.

They handle very well, and very comfy to drive.

It's easy to slate it for being a vauxhall, but lets be honest, nissan have produced plenty of shit cars in their time too and are nothing special. vauxhall/GM have produced powerful cars too, they just largely missed getting to this country and got to Australia/USA.

I have a red top calibra as my second car, and it's great, starts first turn, no leaks, comfy, easy to keep on the road. It has got rust, but it's an early 90/H plate.

Cheap to maintain? Yeah if nowt goes wrong with it!

Gearbox and engine have to be dropped/taken out to replace a clutch, fuel consumption is cack coz of 4wd so not exactly the most economical motor to run. LOL :D

oooh yes, had forgotten about them!

but yeah, you're right, finding a good one will

be a problem. ;)

No, it's just some of the crap you're spouting is hilarious!!

Yes they are cheap to maintain. It's an XE with a turbo on it, very little on those is expensive. The TX box is the most costly thing to replace and these can be reconditioned for under £500. The C20LETs are good strong engines in standard forum. Even with mild boost/fuel upgrades, they aren't bad. Trouble is, they are a chav car now and people are trying to get these engines up over 300bhp....at which point they just turn to chocolate.

The rest is just Cavalier stuff. Bottom arms are about £12, fuel pumps are about £50. Cheap as chips.

Nice looking cars. Shame they are quite unreliable though. Not as powerful as either the Calibra or 220turbo

Recon TX box costs 500 squids to recon? LMFAO :D

You mean 3 times more than the cars worth then! Errrrrr...not rocket science is it? ;)

Yup, I know so as 2 friends have had them done.

Nope, they usually go for around £2k for a nice one. Slightly more for a Cavalier Turbo. Crap ones go for next to nothing.

rover - tat. should have been better built/designed. cally turbo - ok but tx box probs and they're not that fast for what they are. V6 cally is a good one as it loses little (40ish bhp) through FWD and has a chassis to handle it (twist????- wjere did that come from? a cracker?). impreza uk turbo 2000's arent fast and are more fragile than the redtop STI/jap imports. most other jap 4x4's fall into the "nice and cheap untill it breaks" category. AVOID anything french/italian with a turbo as you will have problems unless you're very lucky.

how about a corsa (i know its a chavmobile but hear me out) with a C20XE (2.0 16v)conversion? 45mpg if you're good to it, reasonable ins costs, parts cost pennies and are everywhere and they're reliable and a strong engine. also, 160bhp+in an 850kg car means 188bhp/1000kg. a LWB TTZ (300bhp, 1550kg) is only 194bhp/1000kg. i know the corsa's never going to stick with a Z at speed but for the running costs it'd be close enough to worry them. they usually do mid 5's to 60 and 145mph ish. with no turbo/4wd system to go wrong.if i didnt love my Z so much it'd be high on my list.

si.

lol, seem to have opened a can of worms with the 'twisting chassis'

thing. Oh well, was just passing something on that i'd been told

a few yrs back.

Doesn't really matter to me whether they do or not, as i like

to think i'd have more sense than to buy a shitbox like that

anyway.

Oh, i also heard that the paint falls off under acceleration, especially

as when the chassis twists, it loosens the paint..... :wack:

Both cars are a nightmare.. My calibra 4x4 had more transfer boxes than my Supra's autobox fetish.. and the rovers well there Rovers .. built by plonkers that couldn't make a ham sandwich work
