Hey my bottom end has gone on my engine can anyone put any advice as to what the best method is to resovle the problem? or a price guide as too how much it will cost?

Best bet would be to have a word with one of the zed specialist garages in traders section.

Diagnosing and quoting repair costs on a forum is difficult, it all depends on what exactly is wrong with your bottom end.

as legrath says:its a case of what aint broke, wether it be just a worn bearing or damage to the crank you will be looking at £500+though

i was recently quoted 500 labour, 300 engineering 45 timing belt and that was providing that nothing was seized. was also recommended to change the water pump £120 and oil pump £199. this was from mark at performance heaven

I did my own bottom end, big ends and main bearings. Only thing found slightly worn was the end float thrust washers on one of the mains.

Anyway, it is very easy to do yourself. Drop the cross member and its easy. As the cam belt and water pump etc are in a different place, (sort of) you dont have to do them at the same time. I did the bottom end then do the front end ie belt and pump.

Unless you are doing the oil pump then its all connected. IIRC

i dont think for your average person its easy,if it was just a case of dropping the subframe life would be so much easier

turbo oil return x2 removal

loosen gearbox brackets both sides

drain oil filter

remove engine mount nuts

remove coil packs

engine hoist to lift engine of subframe

remove all sump bolts about 20,peel sump from engine

drop subframe 4x17mm nuts, idealy with air gun

remove sump which is fiddly and only just fits through subframe

inspect crank rod caps for play replace damaged bearings, using th correct grade, which is taken of the end of the crank, check crank is ok and no bearings have attached themselfs to the crank otherwise, all caps to be removed, crank support cradle, front of engine needs to be stripped so you can acsess the crank sprocket, oil pump etc etc etc etc

iv missed lots but the point is,i dont think anyone should attempt it,unless you have time and some knowledge

If you need a bottom end mate, i've still got my one from my old engine which is mint... My 300's head cracked so it worked it cheaper to just get a new engine and save on labour cots..

Well thats OK, you are allowed to have your opinion. And I mine.

I am sure that this would not be attempted by anyone without any knowledge and time, I assumed that was a given.

However it is easy. I was told it was hard by a few people before I started it, but they either dont know what they are on about or they are trying to protect their business.

Which is also OK as we all have to eat. But this job is not hard.

Oh, one more thing. Its a cross member not a subframe. Lol. :-) And if you are doing the job why not drop the member all the way then you can get the sump out very easily.

As for the sizes on the crank, not always true as in my case they were wrong. Dont know why.....But this actually supports your argument in as much as it makes it harder (potentially) Oh Well.

 so you must of recorded the numbers on the crank to come up with the fact they were wrong, then took them to an engineers to get them measured

crossmember/subframe/front suspension member define the differance?

your right though,in the fact it isnt a difficult job,if your compentant and have a hoist, just the way you put it made me laugh,oh its easy LOL iv done about 4 bearing jobs and i dont enjoy doing it ,its harldy like changing the oil in comparison,is all i was saying ;)

And the fact that the Nitropow thread has done enough damage.

Also I was not looking for a fight. :-)

As for the bearing sizes, they didnt match the stampings, so I measured each journal, compared this with the shell sizes made some phone calls, Emailed Courtesy, spoke to Jeff TT who helped alot and crossed my fingers.

Actually as my bearings were not worn it was easy to replace them for the same size. I just wanted to be sure. And if they were the wrong size they would have shown this in how they were worn.

cool ;) you can go 1 grade up but not 1 down, idealy though the correct grade is best, you had some fun getting the bearing from what i remember, but thats another story he says :D

Yes, we shouldnt go there. Lol.

Lifes too short too.
