Silly Question about zero boost.

I know that I have a bad seal (I have a ton of oil leaking into my inercooler) - but I don't get any boost. Does that mean that I have a bad turbo, or does that mean I have to just replace the seal? -

I can hear the passanger side spinn ( right side when in the veh, but nothing from the left side (Driver) - and I don't get any boost, gauge goes to 0 and sits there. =(

I hear Egg.com are offering zero percent apr on their Visa frown.gif

Droop -from what I have read on TTnet (happy now Hairsy biggrin.gif), if you have only one turbo working, you'll hit 0psi boost (the one turbo can provide enough air to keep up with the demand of the engine, but not enough to pressurise the intake)..

 

Given what you said about turbo noises - I'd say that the side you can't hear, is siezed..

Would it be okay to just get that bad turbo rebuilt, me can't afford to do the other one, and wouldn't be able to save any money till about a year from now.

The cost of the rebuild is nothing compared the the cost / pain of the removal / install you neet to take the engine out really and even if you dont it is a major PITA !!!

 

Yeah Aaron is correct IMO wink.gif - The tubos are indepedent of each other and if one seizes the other will happily produce boost - only problem is not enuff to exceed positive vaccum in the intake manifold - The balance tube will still do a reasonable job of balancing the boost across the banks.

 

The problem you will have is gettin exhuast gases out of the cylinder as you will more than likely have seized a shaft which will prevent the exhaust turbine from turning - this will cause increased cylinder temps and back pressure. Therefor if you can't afford the rebuild i would run the car as little as possible.

 

You will deffinaltly feel the performance drop and will be running sub NA performance.

 

If you want to check you can remove some of the Intake pipes and check for sucking or blowing to and from the turbos - easiest one to feel is the suction from the lower intake hard pipe ( Intake -> turbo ) that is the lowest of the 3 and the hardest to remove im afraid - If you can feel nothing ( you will need a fried you trust to try and generate a bit of boost with the handbreak firmly one !!!! plz be carefull) then a seized turbo is what you have !

Nico (thnx first of all), I have one problem, it's my only veh, and I would have to drive it about 32 miles a day for about the next six months. Is that a really bad idea?

Hey Droop,

 

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news mate but i wouldn't risk it - you are risking $$$pensive damage to the engine from exsessive heat and from debris if the turbines shear or are already damaged. I really wouldn't risk it if i were you. You will be ok using it for short drives - I put about 200 miles on mine without any sign of trouble to the engine.

 

If you are in a real bind you could attempt to do the job yourself all you need is about 100 quids worth of tool ( inc Hire of a crane) and garage big enuff. It is a long job but not difficult - you just have to be methodical and carefull.

 

If you are too broke to afford a rebuilt turbo ( you can get them cheap) and your doing the pull yourself you could try rebuilding the turbo yourself - you will need a bit of machine shop work done for you ( balancing Etc) but not more than about 50 quid. I have Docs on how to rebuild one if you require them - NOTE however im only recommending this as you are in a bind - I wouldn't normally recommend anyone builds their own turbo as it is a precision job - If you go this way i would keep your boost on safety (7psi) also.

 

All depends how mechanically minded you are i guess - Failing that - Its credit card time baby wink.gif
