"I just got my car back from its first service since i bought it 3 months ago, according to the garage the previous owner had pulled off a vacuum pipe from the clutch (from the servo-assist) and bunged up the end... the garage has un-bunged it & put it back on & the clutch is now much lighter. Now for my question: Any guesses as for what reason the previous owner might have removed it? We can't figure out what improvement it would make? It just makes the clutch feel heavier...." THANKS TO ALL WHO REPLIED TO THIS THREAD... the clutch boost diaprahm/valve does leak which is why it was disconnected...

I have now got a new problem though... my brakes have been crappy ever since the garage connected this pipe back up... are they in any way connected or is this just coincidence? Any help is appreciated guys.

Yes, the clutch and brake servo's both take a vacuum from the manifold, if the clutch servo is leaking then the vacuum will be less in the brake booster and make the brakes feel crap. thats why the pipe would have been removed and plugged.

You should not get any tranfure of vacuum between the servos as there is a

non return valve on the system. IIRC

Ok two different answers there.. but to be honest the one from fraser would explain my situation, no disrespect there gruntpa64... So the best bet is to get the garage to put the pipe back as it was... I was quite happy with it how it was before! tossers... Have to interfere just to add a few quid to the bill! :-(

ok another thing guys... is it dangerous to leave the system with the clutch boost pipe off & plugged... ? lots of people on here seem to have done it... just getting a bit paranoid now!

wouldnt say it was dangerous to leave clutch side disconected as it only helps with amount of presure you have to aplly to clutch pedal servo only acts aas a helper making clutch pedal liter and therefore easier to use if you are happy with thje way it worlks without the booster then disconect vacume side of things , clutch will sxtill work as it should but without assistance and bgrakes should be back as they were please scuse spelling and lack of punctation etc blame it on 1 bottle of spicy and a bottle of baileys fooook me heads burlin .

Here you go pdf file from the manual

The clutch booster has a non return valve to stop leaks effecting the brakes

also you will find the bleeding routeen for the clutch here as well

So what if the non-return valve is faulty? Need to get this sorted & the easiest/cheapest way I reckon is to put it back how it was... but I really need to get this investigated properly I think... (Too poor now... bloody christmas lol!)

how does the NRV prevent the problem described?

all the nrv does is stops the boost pressure acting on the diaphragm and stops the air getting in after the engine is turned off.
