the prices i have been quoted for a bottom end rebuild is £480 labour (12 hours @ £40 per hour) £300 engineering, £130 gaskets, £45 timing belt. does this sound about right?

Sounds about right Graham, or do the work yourself, get the bores honed, get the right size rings, bearings (after measurement) and DIY. Its a doddle... ;)

i live in jarrow, just outside of newcastle, i was quoted from someone from ebay, performance heaven from cheshire, they have a tuned 300zx engine on there with the reserve set at £3500. how big of a job is it to do. they reckon its done in 12 hours

Yeah I know Mark @ Performace Heaven, I bought my Injectors off him.

He's a decent chap is what I pick up from our first meet, and they have worked on a few Zeds so they know what their talking about.

12 hours, well if they are taking the engine out the car, theirs two hours, then seperating the two halves, then sending the block off to be honed, crank reground ro whatever your having done, then it depends whether their rebuilding the bottom end? Even if their not, they have got to pay someone to do the work, then they gotta build it all back up and put it back in the car. 12 hours sounds sensible to me, they have got to cover themselves in case something goes wrong, which is oh to easy on the V6.

The garage price you have been quoted sounds about right to me....but then I dont own a garage but am going to be taking the job on myself.....

You could PM Mark (Topless) or Greg, they both work for Zed garages ans can give you some form of comparison. Look in the traders section.....HTH

In a rebuild, does this include the crank bein reground and the block being honed?

whoever rebuilds it should be able to tell, especially if they are removing the engine, and just going from the sump and replacing bearings then,NO they wont be getting the block checked honed etc,as all the top half of the engine needs to be stripped,at best if the crank has been damaged or a bearing has welded to it,then the crank may well be reground,or it could be past repair,so id imagine if everything is ok,all they will need to do is replace bearings on the rods, the main end bearings rarely go so i should imagine it will be sump off and rod bearings replaced, fingers crossed no more damage is apparent.if there stripping the whole engine id be surprised if they can do that in 12hours,as nothing on 300s in straight forward, they could if they wanted drop the subframe remove turbo feeds, and remove sump with engine in situ, not much fun but can save time, and give you a report to what damage has been done

cheers greg ya 1 star, next question, where is the resevoir for the hicas fluid? is it automatic transmition fluid you use?

and not power steering fluid as suggested earlier by someone

and not power steering fluid as suggested earlier by someone

as said hicas an PS uses the same pot which is left front corner of engine bay[green pot]

checked the fluid level but still my hicas light is on. any ideas?

was it running as you will only get correct reading if its warm , ie bin pumping around the system let everything warm up to normal opp temp then switch off , if you dont feel safe then have a look

its been on for the last few days, the car has been run, the fluid level is fine. what else would cause this problem.
