Just had my back wheel off to sort out some dodgy wheel studs and I couldn't fail to notice that theres quite a lot of surface rust on the suspension arms etc. (yes its a UK car!). I can use a wire brush or one of those drill mounted jobbys to clean everything up but I was wondering what paint to use to 'dress' all the bare metal afterwards. Would Hammerite do or is there something better I can use? Obviously, it needs to be corrosion resistant and preferably brush applied.

im gonna strip mine out and get em powder coated, take all the old bushes out and fit new..

 

otherwise, clean em up, wipe em down and de-grease em then spray with a smooth hammerite if need be or brush it on. but if you take it apart you can get to everything, then spraying is quicker and easier.

What he says. But once its all back in the car then spray some WAXOYL over everything(not the brake discs tho!!!)

Was thinking about this as quite a few of the bushes need replacing as they are perished. I can't decide how big a job that would be though, and if its beyond my means.

You might find that this offers as much protection against future rust as any paint will do. If you paint it, you'll have to neutralise the rust with a suitable rust inhibitor. Problem with some of these is that they form a layer, and then you have to paint over them. And with any paint, you run the risk of water getting between the paint and the metal, and the metal rusting some more. If I were you, I'd waxoil it - and I'd do it again in the middle of the summer - so that the hot weather keeps the waxoil liquid longer so that it can soak into the joints better.

 

Anyway, as a 90 car, how long are you intending keeping it? If you get a couple of years out of a tin of waxoil, it's got to be the easiest way forward...

Thanks for that Jack, definitely food for thought. I think I need to take a good look at how much I can do without dropping the subframe and go for that. As for how long I intend keeping the car, who knows? I know that it is getting on on years and so 'damage-limitation' is the name of the game rather than full restoration.

personally if you intend to refurb them then do it properly, get it powder coated, this involves taking it to a powder coaters after removing all the crap old bushes, they will media blast and then dip the parts, they will then be coated and baked, as for waxoil.. they wont need it depending on the quality of the coating.

 

make sure that before they powder coat that they block all the holes.

then they can powder coat however they know this but point out the holes that need blocking.

 

then im sure one of the traders here, i think chris greddy sell em, can sell you all the bushes you need!!

 

personally i feel that the best way to look after these cars is never to go for the cheap option, and every other owner here will tell you, cheap and a zx dont mix..
