HID lights agian!!!!!

Could the HID lights come from any car????

 

What i mean is, could I use the invertors etc from, say a Vauxhall Omega?, or any car with HID lights ?

 

Do the invertors have to match with the bulbs, so could I run Vauxhall invertors with Nissan bulbs?

I don,t know about mix matching of ballast boxes and bulbs but iv,e fitted a set out of a merc in mine , basically i canabalised a set of merc headlights , i kept the reflector out of the merc lights to use the bulb holder ,i stripped my lights down to clean and fix the adjusters ,the bulb holder on a zed is a cast metal item held on with two screws , i removed that and using a Dremel ground off the lugs that the screws went into and opened the original bulb hole out a bit until the bulb holder from the merc light was a snug fit ( making sure its the right way up ) .

I glued that in place using Epoxy and put the ballast boxes and the other little box whatever it is, in a Tuppewaware tub under the lights , you might luagh but it does keep em dry :D

By the time you buy them from a scrapy then if youhave to change the bulbs (some are £100+ each) i cant see why you'd want to take the risk IMO

I suppose i,m quite lucky , i work in a bodyshop so when a smashed car comes in with broken headlights i check em out to see if there HID,s , if so i grab em :hyper:

Cars iv,e seen with HID,s as standard , the replacement headlights come as a complete package and are bloody expensive :shock: :shock:

I reckon you're better off buying the plug and play conversion kits from the traders here. Mark at Outlander and IIRC Chris at GetGreddy do them for not much over £200-ish.

 

No fekking about converting the headlights, you get brand new bulbs and it will take you all of 1/2 hour to fit :bow:

Just a note in case you didn't know, cars with HID lights must have a headlight wash and an automatic load levelling system fitted.

 

HID beam intensity to oncoming traffic is a PIA if your beam is not adjusted correctly, and the beam will vary during acceleration braking etc etc.

 

I don't think the MOT stations are picking up on this yet but it won't be long before they do.

I read this guidance received from The Department of Transport........

 

Dear Sir,

 

The situation for Gas Discharge (HID High Intensity Discharge) (commonly known as Xenon) headlamps is complex.

 

I attach links to the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 which regulate the situation in the UK.

Under these Regulations Xenon headlamps are not mentioned and therefore they are not permitted according to the strict letter of the law.

 

However you will be well aware that new vehicles have Xenon headlamps. This is because they comply to European type approval Regulations. The UK cannot refuse to register a vehicle with a European type approval. These are to ECE Regulation 98 (for the Xenon headlamps which are tested on a rig in a laboratory) and ECE Regulation 48 (Lighting Installation on the vehicle).

 

For the aftermarket, a used vehicle cannot obtain type approval because it is only applicable for new vehicles. However we feel that saying "Xenon is banned in the aftermarket" would not be reasonable. Instead we should make analogies with new vehicles. It would be reasonable to require Xenon in the aftermarket to meet the same safety standards as on new vehicles. The same level of safety should apply.

 

Therefore a Xenon headlamp sold in the aftermarket should:

 

1. be type approved to ECE Regulation 98 as a component.

2. when fitted to the vehicle should enable ECE Regulation 48 to be complied with (although no government inspection will take place).

3, Comply with RVLR as far as "use" is concerned.

 

In practice this means:

 

1. The headlamp unit (outer lens, reflector, bulb) shall be type approved to ECE 98 and be "e-marked" to demonstrate this. That can only be done by the headlamp supplier - Hella, Valeo etc. who must test the headlamp in an independent laboratory.

2. Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam.

3. The headlamp must be maintained in good working order, kept clean, and aligned/adjusted correctly like any other headlamp.

We are aware of kit available in the aftermarket where a Xenon "burner" or bulb is fitted inside a headlamp designed for use with conventional Halogen filament bulbs. The burner is fitted with a "bayonet" type fitting so it fits where the Halogen bulb should fit. This is not legal and the vendor, the person who mounts it on the vehicle and the person who drives the vehicle are all committing an offence. (Which also means that he is invalidating the insurance.)

The reason for this is that headlamps and bulbs are made to tight tolerances and the wrong type of bulb will cause an incorrect beam pattern to be emitted, which could cause dazzle and discomfort to other drivers

oh, well that throws more LIGHT ( get it, LIGHT !!! ) on the matter - yhanks guys very much, as my car doesn't have wash or self levelling, I think i'll spend the cash on something else for the Z - thanks again.
