Been thinking about a track day and wanted to get a few opinions of which people would prefer : either a day at the pod RWYB or

a proper track day

I'm sure everyone would say a proper trackday every time. I used to go to the Pod quite regularly... £10 to get in, £15 sign on, £5 food, £30 for a good day.

Did an open pit lane day at Donington last month, £180 sign on, £240 tyres, £400 brakes, £20 helmets, etc etc. Truly fantastic day though, loved every minute  Except my brakes finally giving up at stupid speeds into (and out of!!) Esses.

Pod is popular because it is cheap.

Do the track day mate, it'll be one of the best days you could ever have in your car. Be prepared for the other costs as above, they are well worth it though. The standard brakes are pretty sh*te and start fading badly after a few sessions (mine were almost new high quality pads and had never faded on the road). I had a new set of rear tyres that probably got half worn out, the front ones were badly worn on the outside edges, although they are still on the car but definately need replacing. I wouldn't go unless your car was 100%. It's a completely different kettle of fish to driving on the road, made me realise I wasn't anywhere near the driving jedi I thought I was!!

Done both and..........

The pod other drag tracks!

Cheap, competitive and very rewarding (if you have no probs), on a RWYB (Run what yer brung) day you get unlimited runs, there is a track limit (at the pod) of 250 sign in's! which if it is all full can delay things some what!

Track days

More expensive, lots more wear and tear to you and your car but HUUUUUUUUUGE fun. I've only done one in the Z and TBH, i'd only do an airfield day as there is a greater run off area! and in all honesty. An average track day costs aroung £150, and as Pete has mentioned brakes, tyres and i can add lots of fuel! I did 60 odd miles around Bruntingthorpe and used about £45 worth of Optimax! :D

Here is a pic of my rear brakes after a track session at Bruntingthorpe..........

i'd do either, but as i do love me dragging (ooer) id have to go for that everytime!!

Doesnt really matter what the rest of us do or prefer mate. Its about what you want to do!

And important considerations are COST and distance from whatever venue you want to attend.

The previous posters have already outlined some proper costings.

The two forms of motorsport are completely different.

EG Track days are untimed and offer no back to back comparisons. Costs depend on what track and how long you are allowed to play. I use the word play because thats what it is. Its big boys playtime and many members hugely enjoy it.I might have a go next year

Drag racing is much cheaper to take part in. But time "on the track" is limited to say the least. At The Oct Jap Show my total track time for the day was LESS than 45secs.

And even on a run what you brung day where people like Chunk , Shrimpy and me might get 7/8 runs in that is still less than 2 minutes of driving. The up side of this is of course that is a very precise and intense form of motorsport where times are measured in HUNDREDTHS of a sec and are recorded for all to see. :D

well the skyline owners club is doing a track day so could tack onto that, if anyones interested i can find out more info and its just them, think theres about 18 going so far and paid and they have hired out the track

its snetterton there hiring

Which is 269 miles from Morecambe.

253 miles from Cardiff

and 270 miles from Taunton(or wherever Legrath lives in Somerset)

SO... a 500+mile round trip for all of you??????

i wud love to go round a track but do you think my car is to low, for hard breaking and that.

karl

well if the car was healthy i would love to get it on a track not worried about dragging as 1/4 mile speeds dont count for that much on a track you have to be good in all areas acceleration brakeing cornering oh yeah and getting out of disasters easily

It's gotta be a track day!!! It will test all the charicteristics of you and what your Z can do and hopefully make you a better driver!!! I'm gonna give on a go next year as my big bro is always raving about driving his BMW M3 around Castle Combe so really looking forward to having a go myself!

Reason im asking is i would like to try and organise a group track day - i was meant to go 2 one at a track near me on saturday but it got cancelled because of 2 many people pulling out!!!!! Was absolutely gutted!!!!! I'd like to see how many members would be up for a track day then see how much it would be to hire the track - the more people the cheaper it is for each person then !!!!! What do u guys think????

i'd love a track day but am scared of crashing into the barrier like i do on grand turismo 4, and in real life there is no start again button LOL!!

well lets face it its always gonna be a trek for me lol but thats why god invented travel inns :D

Track day every time for me.

Your better off going to a ciruit that will offer tuition for a few laps if you've never done a track day before. Might sound soft cos you all think your good drivers, but it'll save your car a lot of pain (cos its going to get some) and improve you track craft by as much as 2 to 3 seconds a lap if you are a good driver and if your not 10 + seconds + improve you high speed driving for ever.

I've done some prodi bike racing in the past, Go Kart racing and thought it would be cool to take my Palmer Audi licence. I had to have some tract tuition time which I thought I didn't need, but it improved my lap times. + The scariest thing was it was a young lady who taught me.

Your car will need to be in tip top condition and you'll need dam good brakes or it will break. + A good track day will scrub at lease half to two thirds of the life of your back tyres away. So if you can get your mitts on some semi slicks

The lower you car the better. the track is one place where you can go low and if your worried that you'll ground under braking your springs must be fooked

Another reason for the tuition. Then just feel your way into it and if its not a car you can afford to wreck that stick to what your taught

I drove really hard and my rear tyres were totally fine, it was the fronts that took the hammering, from braking and cornering.

It's not like you take every corner sideways, and scrub the rears.

Agree about the tuition - it makes you massively smoother, quicker and more confident in braking and cornering lines etc. They do push you hard though.

.

Show boating :D :D

it depends on your brake byest + how ever you have your car set up.

I have my front end set to 0 toe and -1 degree whilst the rear is 0.5 toe in and -2 degree camber which makes her understeer slightly so you push the back end out a bit and keep the power well nailed.

It also makes her twitch in the rain, but predictable so long as I'm smooth.

How about doing track day at Mallory park Central ish location ?

I'd be up for it though you'll need at least 20 to 30 and when the costs start to tot up most usually back out. Unless you offer it up the the z club lot. They always manage a good turn out for these things.

I've never even been to Mallory what it like.

id be up for either!!

track and race car magazine did a day at brands last year, was very good. drivers were split into beginners, intermediate and advanced, each group going out for a session every hour seperately.

i went up with my mate and took his race spec alfa round, good car to start in really.

ended up with 7 20 min sessions (long day!!!) and free bacon sandwiches. cost about £200 plus helmet, petrol, brakes etc.

would def be up for doing a lot more like this in the zed, after seeing how different to the alfa it handled around castle coombe.

would still like to try rwyb, and drifting too - see what i enjoy the most!

i think m@1975 is involved in drifting???

That sounds good value and a cracking day.

  • 1 month later...

Track day is more fun by far but drag is good too.

I did the same track day as chunk last year at Bruntingthorpe airfield and it was fantastic. They are much better than tracks IMHO as you dont need a helmet and there is loads of runout if the worst happens. And Bruntingthorpe has a 2 mile straight. Mallory is a bit too small IMHO for zeds. I drove it in a race spec TVR and the lap is less than 50 secs.
