Was on my way home tonight and a 350Z was following me for a bit, got to a double lane road with him next to me and tried baiting him but he wouldnt bite (must have seen THAT episode of Top Gear).

So just driving along and ended up behind him cos there was a van parked in the middle of my lane unloading things. I'm casually following the 350 (me on the inside lane, him on the outside) and a Golf V5 4Motion blasts past me and is driving up the arse of the 350.

350 pulls in and as the golf begins to pass the 350 driver guns it (how do i know? cos i saw him lose traction as the back end twitched). Still following them both i boot it to watch what happens and the Golf pulled a few car lengths on the 350 over about 1/3 of a mile and then we came to a roundabout. Is the 350 driver just crap or are the Golfs really that quick?

Bloody good thing we all slowed down alot at the roundabout, there was cop car parked up just waiting for someone to blast past. For all the Leicester guys this is the first roundabout you get to after Asda on London Road (driving away from city centre).

Just had a look here:

Kind of suggests the 350Z driver was sleeping, or doesn't know what the peddle on the right is for. 9.2 seconds to 60. My old Clio would do it in 10.4. The GTi isn't much better: 7.2 seconds. Well, OK, I suppose 2 seconds is better than a kick in the head.

New definition for irony though: spending the best part of twenty grand, minus the part exchange, on a brand new Golf GTi because you fancied something a "bit sporty". Grr.

Twenty grand!! Unbelievable.

Sorry, on a roll here. Just found something else that winds me up about VWs. Check out this review of the 2001 Golf GTi (bear in mind that I used to think this was quite a cool car). 2.0 litre, 20valve *turbo* kicking out.... 150 bhp. Why even bother?

I think, from memory, the 350Z will hit 60 in 5.9 seconds, but don't quote me on that. Not as fast as a TT Z32, but still in a different league to the Golf.

Ya5 does that mean the racecourse roundabout before asda or the great glen one after asda (and sainsbury's) going away from town? there's usually a copper sitting in the quiet 'layby' at the bottom of the hill :xxx:

and you be careful Darren, don't want that licence being taken off you so soon!

Not the racecourse roundabout dave, that's where i tried to start a bit of a race (from 0-40mph only, obviously!).

It's the next roundabout after asda going away from town, must be the great glen one (i dont know what its called) Don't usually drive down those ends myself but couldnt resist trying to get the 350Z to have a go.

The coppers where just sitting there in the layby (what would be the 3rd exit) with their lights off waiting, its pretty dark in that layby too!

This here says the V5 4Motion has 204bhp: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/road_tests/?id=13

They didnt race from a standstill, it was more like 50 to over 100 (my speedo doesnt work so i cant confirm lol)

check the torgue levels on the golf they do go some once moving. had one keep with my zx for a few meters.

Me too...although it was a relatively low number...lol

V5's are a little diff to normal four motion as said, they are not that quick, and are pretty lardy (for a golf that is having owned mk1 and mk2's).

You've got to take into account the golf already had a massive head start if he was already flat out going past the Z when he booted it. If I was flat out in my (cough) VTS and a 350z started flooring it only after I was already flat out in the power passing him he would have troubles catching me up and passing me (say upto a ton) as I would already have a massive head start.

I think most of us have been in a similar situation, you have someone trying to race you, you don't bother, then decide when they come flying past to give it some beans, the results usualy arn't that impressive, even with over 300hp trying to find their way to the rear wheels.......

That's true Steve BUT the golf was up the 350s backside for a good time before the 350 pulled in to let him pass so they would have been rolling next to eachother at about the same speed, golf maybe slightly faster.

I guess so.

I think a lot of people do get blinded by power and torque of cars, and book times to 60 and 100 etc.

At the end of the day, even a car like my runaround which is 0-60 is just over 7 seconds could easily give a stock Z a run for it's money. The difference between 6 seconds to 60 and 7.2 or 7.6 whatever it is, is not a lot on the road. I used to think anything over 7 second teritory was slow, but how much really is a couple of seconds when on a normal road? not a lot, a better gear change than someone, or starting off in a better gear, getting your foot down even 2 seconds before someone else, it all adds up, anything can shave a second or two off.

I know I have had some fun thrashing my little DD against some bigger cars, purely because I go for it, and they are too relaxed / suprised that by the time they really get their ass in gear, I'm already off!

I think 0-60 shed loads of HP and Torque are good at the track when you both have an equal chance and indicator to go by, but dirving around is totally diff.

I guess what i'm trying to say is, if one person has more will than the other and is that little bit sharper (because the other person is so caught up in the fact they have 400p or whatever under their bonnet), the smaller car can keep up with substanially bigger cars (obviously providing it is a sporty-ish hatch or something not a fiat panda lol!).

I guess also, lets not loose site that this wasn't a propper Z that was racing him ;)

dude what is your runabout? 7 to 60 is pretty damn quick :)

i was looking at golf gti turbos recently, they are 8 seconds to 60. i agree that the mark 4 was disappointing. a golf gti 2.0 does 0-60 in 10 seconds?!! er...?!!!

think i'll go for an audi a3 turbo as my next car, 7.9 to 60 and then i can chip it ;)

you're spot on about how 0-60 isn't everything, especially in road races

-v-

btw, your M3 is rude :D

-v-

woah crazy. i never realised the vts was so quick. and it only has 120bhp! mental :D

my old 205 gti was a 1.6 but only did 0-60 in 8.9...crazy to think a VTS would rinse a 1.8 turbo audi A3! i wouldnt mind getting one except for the Audi has great build quality, reliability and feels luxurious :)

Yes it's pretty funny, most people are suprised with this little car. It's mostly down to all of the boy racers buying VTR's and racing them around like they are formula one cars when they only have about 88hp or something like that. I have seen hundreds of Saxo's in swindon, all kitted up, and none of them have been the VTS, only the lower power VTR. Apparantly the reason is because the VTR is group7 whilst the VTS is a group 14 so most first timers cant afford to insure it.

It is exactly the same looking car, same wheels and everything, the only difference is a little 16v badge on the rear quaters and the VTS on the bump strip instead of the VTR, although you can also get an 8v VTS too.

It's completly standard also, with girly trimmed seats and very high off the ground, so it makes it even more funny. I actually had a run in with a golf gti turbo the other day, and I cained him to 100. What was more funny, he had massive alloys all the usual crap on it, big exhaust, blow off valve, stickers all over the place and his mate in the car. Stereo blasting. He was redlining it in gear changes too because it was popping on the limiter. There I was in my little girly shopping trolly, completly silent and sitting about 6 feet off of the floor and I totally killed him. At the lights when he caught me up he exclaimed out the window that my car can not possibly be standard, I just laughed ;)

P.S the build quality is shit on the paxo, and the interior is one of the worst i've seen, and if you rag it, it eats petrol for some reason (did around 38 to a tenner the other day), sensible though and it will see over 340 miles on 35 squid. Still a great little runaround though :)

VR6 4-motion is the 200bhp one - it is a 2.9 v6 from the corrado. They are fairly swift and run just over 15 second quarters.

Richard :smw:

ok now im confused  i thought the VR6 was in the mk3 golf and the mk4 was V5, i have no 'real' knowledge of golfs, just going by what i have seen on the back of the cars. Never seen a mk4 VR6.

EDIT: just seen that datasheet, it was definately badged a 4Motion so i must have misread the V6 before it as V5, sorry :nelson:

Yeh, new one is a V5, its crap, it's a 2.3 lump 5 cylinder 20v.

Bout 160ish hp and 180lb

4 motion is a lower spec of the R32, with diff crank and pistons.

But they DO do a V5
