hi all, pls give me sum sanaty, as you know you know what i do for a living and have taken this job in london and i have the responsabilty of not only my client but 60 other blokes and women, but you know when you just have one of them days when no matter what you say or do they dont listen or see that your making sence.

ignore them and do what you have to do. If their still being a pain, sack the one with biggest gob. I find that it gets your point across.

I loose the plot big time to ensure everyone knows I'm not impressed.. Not a perfect management style I know but generally effective :)

i wish mate, but i am finding it hard to keep my cool, i remember when i hit my mate a while back and i told everyone and got grilled for it, so im trying to learn from that, man its hard to bite your tounge isnt it.

You sound like ur being to nice m8, your the boss and they dont need to see that you are making sence, if what you are saying to them is totall *****x , as the boss the either do it your way or fook off. They need to know that, in my experiance i would honestly say that if most of your staff dont dislike you then you are not doing your job properly and you will not get the best out of them, sound odd but works for me. I agree with russ, sack the troublemaker. Gross misconduct is a great term no need for warnings, simple do as i say or your out for gross misconduct

totally mate, like i said i wish i could but because we all work for the goverment in a high profile job for sum stupid reason which i carnt explain there are set things we have to do and at the moment no one has done anything that obtains disaplinary. there just been cocks, well 5 of them, and there all from either st vincent or turkey. not saying thats the problem or been racist but im sure it has an input on it, they have there little gangs and stuff.

Think back to when you were an employee, what bosses did you have that did a good job got the point across and who you really WORKED for, how did they do it?, most of the bosses I have had that shouted and lost their rag or made mistakes didnt get the best out of me, ones that I could see doing a good job, spoke to me correctly were firm but fair and straight talking, they were the ones that got me to do what they wanted and I was happy to do what I was told and had respect for them. Its a relationship that has to be worked on, then once new people are employed they tend to see how others react to you and follow suit.

yes i can see where your going but i am all them things mate, i think maybe i was to fair in the beginning and not enough firm, thats wat has to come now but in a slow sort of way, would you say thats right

Must admit I do think people from certain countries have a common general attitude to work, no matter how predjudiced that sounds. The Marines had a recruitment drive in some of the islands such as Carribean, Figi and the like and they are nearly all very lazy people who couldn't cope with hard graft. Some were strong as ox's but still lazy, most weren't all that clever due to poor education. It wasn't that they were bad people, they just came from a very laid back upbringing and lifestyle that doesn't translate all that well to what is expected in the UK. Don't we work some of the longest hours in the world?

But to come back to the point, I'm sure they will respect you if you are genuine, consistent and tell them what you want. Don't beat around the bush.

Im an IT manager and my style is a clenched fist in a silk glove. I am polite and try to deal with everyone. I explicity let people know what i expect from them. If my subordinates are unruly i smack them down and build them back up again.

Its all about your credability and a will to get things done.

I am fortunate to have a MD that is very supportive of me. If a boss is not giving you enough support then it becomes a nightmare.

I am also an IT Manager. I have a large financial institution for a client and manage teams of engineers. There are lots of laws now that protect the employee from this "clenched fist in a silk glove". We have to tread softly, make sure al bases are covered and HR are aware of any issues you are having. It is also useful to keep a note of troublesome employees and note in a diary when they do things that you have had to pull them up for. Also make sure HR are in on any disciplinary hearings. If in doubt, ask HR as they will know what legally you can do.

I work in the UK division of an american titanium metals company. I cover the UK, France and some other european branches. There are about 100 employees in Europe which i really like. There is nowhere to hide.

I hate big corporate work environments. You get people who play the system rather than actually being a team player and getting the job done.

Scientists should research why some dumb asses think the sun shines out of their arse when they put a tie on ;)
