Anyone have experience of restarting an overheated engine?

I cut the engine as soon as I could but it won't restart again, the engine spins quite happily and doesn't make any funny noises, there's spark going to the cylinders and I know at least one of them has compression, also everything reads code55. I think that its overfuelling but I can't be certain, also I can't think of anything that might be cooked enough to stop it starting without throwing an error code.

well if the rings are baked or the pistons are holed then that wont give a code.

the engine wont run on 1/6 of the cylinders. youl have to check the rest of them. if its over fueling and theres a spark then it should at least fire, unless there is no compression. in which case your goosed.

are the plugs coming out wet? if not, put a splash of petrol down each plughole and spin it over, if it fires a few times then its an injector related problem. doesnt sound good tho

in my experiance with v engines (ford not z lol) when they cook the head gasket blew and lost compression so the car would not fire try the fuel in the cylinders but it sounds to me like you'll need to rebuild the engine

I was thinking headgasket- but surely wouldn't the whole thing have to be screwed so that all cylinders lose compression? Likewise with the pistons- all of them would have to be knackered for all of them not to fire, and the strong smell of fuel suggests the injectors are working. I'd like to give this engine a good try before I go through the ballache of chucking in the spare.

best idea if it smells of fuel take the plugs out and let it all dry out for a few hours it could just be flooded then try it again

Already left it overnight to dry a couple of times :(, After I do that I could swear I hear a few pops, but they don't re-occur till its had time to dry again.

I've heard of a couple of cooked engines with no obvious mechanical problems being sold, although I only heard about the sale, I don't know what the next owners did to fix them.

try a full compression test on all 6 cylinders first.

Severly cooked VG30 engines usually have warped heads and/or holed pistons, which shows up as low to no compression on one or more cylinders.

if compression is fine on all cylinders (~10 bar) then you still have the risk of a damaged headgasket, but the engine should at least start and if failing that it's probably some electric fault that is causing the car not to start.

Check all mentioned above, also things like ptu/ wireing/coilpacks.

Same happened to me, I am just about to finally change the headgaskets, check and re-ring the pistons and have the head pressure tested.

All standard stuff really......The cars been running with a dodgy gasket for sometime now!! :( Just never got round to sorting it....

Looks like we're in the same boat, well after another night of trying I can't be bothered with this one, I'm just gonna put in the spare and take this one apart- I'll post when I know whats wrong with it (assuming that its something worth posting).

I've got a spare engine too up on a stand ready but I am gonna work on the engine in the car, and then if the heads are warped, see what the spare ones are like.....

Whichever way I get it done, I'm doing myself which means it will be done properly.....no offence to garages, I just like the peace of mind knowing that if something goes wrong, its my fault and no-one elses....at the end of the day, we all make mistakes....but rest assured, alot of time will be taken to make sure its all done right...
