I temporarily messed around with mine and the car was quick, but it's back in the middle and drives sh1t slow again.

My question is, is there any way to tell if the timing is out apart from the timing gun? e.g engine noise, rough idling. etc.

when i moved the cas to the left the car was running sweet, no noise, idling perfect.....and most of all quicker.

it may well run rough if the timing is advanced or retarded so as you already said you need a timing gun to set it up correctly

by advancing the timing by a degree or so is similar to running extra boost, just be careful i wouldnt recomend it myself if your running extra boost aswell!
