If i disconnect the exiter wire for the alternator while the engine is running.

will it;

1. stop charging the battery

2. damage the alternator in anyway

Just got a little idea that I could remove the load from the alternator when in positive boost

Featured Replies

your not meant to do that i think it still damages the diode.

plus on a fully charged battery the power drain will be negligable. only at night with full beams and AC on will u notice it. better off getting under drive pullies. although the same energy is required to charge the battery regardless of how fast the alternator spins.

just be careful as the starter is dangerous to work around whilst the battery is hooked up so must be the alternator not work safe,besides at night with lights on the car would only run for about 30mins and all power will be lost

When I rebuilt my car I forgot to connect the alternator up. With the engine just idleing on a stand, it lasted about 15 mins before it flattened a brand new Bosch battery.

Driving around I would say its even less.

Cheers for the info guys. I was going to make a circuit that will disconnected the alternator when the engine is running in positive boost so the time it wouldnt be charging would be a short length of time.

I was mainly worried about damaging the alternater.

Im going to be getting an underdrive pulley as well

What is the point of doing that?

You are going to drop the power of the electrics at the time when it needs it the most?
