Hi guys, the alterenator died in my 300zx import, so I took to a local alternator specialist and it said it will take half a day to get it off, and another half a day to put back together. So it would be around 140 quid. Then when he took it off he realised I need new belts, he is reconditioning the alternator.

For this hes charging me 240 quid now.

IS this a fair price????

to get the alternator off is an hour job and roughly the same to put it on again belts are around £15 each sounds a bit expensive to me

make sure you get your old belts and question why he is changing them, only the alternator belt needs to be removed to remove alternator,so why he sugests you need new belts is beyond me

Are there any other garages/specialists that you can phone to compare prices, get prices of belts and ask him to break down his bill, then with comparison you can see, locally here a friend got her astra alternator reconditioned for 30 quid, no comparison as 5 minutes the alternator is off, whereas a zed is more labour intensive.

Worthwhile phoning around.

£140 for a days work, does he want to do my zed

£240 is a days labour charge, I can get the alternator off in an hour, back on in an hour and thats while laying under the car, a lot easier for a decent garage with a lift. To recondition an alternator is about £40, belts about £45 if he is replacing all of them, and usually £25 an hour labour. Thats say £150 including his coffee breaks, I think most places just bump the price up because of the type of car it is.

yeah when garages se our cars they see ££££ in their eyes so if its not to difficult try to do it yourself, exelent way to learn how to keep your zed in tip top condition!!

Just had mine replaced by someone who has never done one on a Z took him 40 mins to get it off and fit the new one, charged me £25

done mine meself a whie ago - took me under 2 hours to remove and refit - never done it before - laying underneath car in pissin down rain - and I had a crap set of tools

exactly remove 17mm bolt undo bracket 12mm on the front 12mm on the back remove belt drop alternator pull harness out and 10mm nut, only fiddly bit is getting the alternator nut on the back of the alternator but other than that easy
