Left bank running rich! Oxygen sensor possibly??

This is the sensor that is bolted into the turbo. I think that mine is knackered cos when I go into diagnostics, the computer is saying that the left bank is running rich regardless of whether I unplug the sensor in or not! Yet on the right side everything is OK.

Does anyone have one 4 sale?

I'd be careful with the diagnosis. It could point to a dodgy sensor but not definitely. Assuming you're running the diagnostics with engine running and looking for the light flashing on and off 5 times every 10 seconds, then if you disconnect the sensor, it will just show static on or off.

Although it's really difficult to do, my only suggestion would be to swap the sensors over and see if the problem moves from one side to the other.

As I say, this doesn't mean you're wrong - just don't dive in with a new sensor unless you have to (at £80 or whatever it is).

Good luck

Good point! but how the hell do you get the buggers out in the first place? They're a nightmare to get at, in fact you can't even get a spanner on them!

Shaun... O2's...

Passenger side;

Remove battery

If possible (i.e. it's not rusted solid), remove battery tray (two bolts, underneath the plastic tray, which just pulls out).

Get a Snap-On O2 tool (part no. YA8875 from http://www.snap-on.com/uk), two 9" 1/2" drive extensions, a 1/2" drive UJ, breaker bar (bigger the better), and a 1/2" to 3/8" reducer.

Attach them in the order; tool, reducer, UJ, extension, extension.

Maneuver the tool onto the o2 sensor, putting the cable through the cutout, you should have just enough space to crack the sensor off a few degrees, before raising the tool, and rotating back, and so on.

Once it's loose, get your hand down there and unscrew it, replace with the new one, tighten by hand, and then tweak it up with the same tool.

Drivers side;

Same technique, but access is more difficult. You *may* be able to do it without removing anything, but you'll need small hands to get to the sensor.

Failing that, you have to remove the brake master cylinder (two bolts, and the brake pipes - get a pipe spanner for this).

I have both the drivers & passenger side O2 sensor spare (brand new, unopened packaging) - that'd save you importing them from the states/paying Nissan prices..
