problems starting+idle

My black tt has got a real problem starting, it turns over for ages and after spraying about 20quids worth of fuel it fires up reluctently and has an irratic idle. It'll sit at around a 1000rpm and then drops of to way below 500rpm to the point of nearly stalling, almost as if one of the cylinders isnt firing.

I've changed the plugs and got no joy from that, but the coil packs seemed very brittle so im thinking maybe one of them is doggy?

but then to add to my confusion a mechanic (my mates supra mechanic of all people! lol) reckons it sounds like an airleak. Its had its emissions tested recently and they were spot on, but that was probably on one of the few occasions that it was behaving, 8 times out of ten it's doing the above.

Sorry for going on but Im new to this message posting buisness
