A happy ending

Well, after my little dice with potential disaster following the failure of my brakes, Nissan gave me nice little heart attack after they told me that the bill was going to be near on £700.

They said that the caliper had ceazed and I needed a new caliper, pair of pads and new brake fluid.

One phone call to Z World and a pain staking 60 miles at 50 mph, Jeff managed to free off the caliper and put in new brake pads and all within 2 hours.

More work follow in 2 weeks.

We considered that but there was always the posibility that the piston seals would not hold after the rebuild.

You must bare in mind that we had no spare caliper parts to work with so yesterday's result was pretty good.

In 2 weeks, therewill be the renewal of dust covers, brake fluid, rear disk and pads, and handbrake cable, along with a few other things.

A couple of points Cos has not raised one been how long it took the Nelson to look at the problem and they originally told him that the bores were damaged and the caliper totally f..cked! Once I was in to the caliper after incidently wrestling with my large wheel brace to loosen the wheel nuts (Nelson overtightened with an air gun!)it was obvious from the pad retaining pins and anti rattle plate that little or no inspection had taken place, most likely was a 10 second visual check.Fair enough the caliper had two seized pistons, but with plenty of WD40, brake pad removed and pressure from on the brake pedal the pistons moved after levering in and out half a dozen times all working fine a quick degrease and a set of new pads each side and job done in 2 hours!! Nelson could of done why they had it in less ..for one they already had the wheel off.I think they charged Cos £25 or so that was a mighty expensive wheel off and back on again. If any one is interested I can remove and replace wheels for a cut down price of £15 per wheel (lol) Really must give Nissan`s customer care dept. a chance to reply to some of these comments.Hmm

Agreed!

Infact, what totally confussed me is how the mechanic knew that the pistons and bores of the calipers had become pitted if they had not removed the pads to inspect the caliper.

INFACT - THAT DOES IT, I'M GOING TO WRITE A LETTER OF COMPLAINT TO NISSAN CENTRAL AND DEMAND MY INSPECTION FEE BACK.

Jeff, as we have proof that they did not remove the pads, do you think it's possible that they did not remove the wheel either and just assumed that the caliper had ceazed just because the wheel would not spin freely?

Hmmm in all fairness Cos I concluded they had removed the wheel as the nuts where so tight on that wheel and not so on the other front wheel, interesting point though, that puts me in mind of what one mechanic fom a Ford dealership told me some years ago. That they had an escort in with reported excessive brake pedal movement, their quick fix was to move the seat forward one click and move the car to another part of the forecourt so when the customer returned it looked like it had been in the workshop!!! AMAZING

FFS! Nelson are NO better than anyone else are they? Nothing but RIP OFF is all you ever hear from main dealers!

My Auntie has a 100NX and she took it to her local Nelson as she was hearing a grinding noise from the front of the car! You know where this is going!

They couldn't find anything wrong! Muppets!

She was still getting it so she took it somewhere else and you'll never guess what was wrong? ROFL biggrin.gif

Her pads were worn!

These people don't deserve a job, they should be picking up litter instead! mad.gif
