More bad news from SE

Just to recap. Took my Z in with engine problems beginning of November, lots of faults found and the bill just keeps growing and growing.

Got home from work today and found a message on my answer phone from them telling me that on close inspection it appears at least one and possibly both turbos are Fu**ed.

Their catalogue states £475 for a recon stock turbo. Before I ring them back does anybody know of a better deal on turbos or maybe have decent turbos to sell?

Thanks guys.

Steve.

Forgot to mention its a 92 UK spec auto.

Oh dear Steve, sorry to hear about this!

You must know whether or not your Turbos were on the way out before hand? Be firm with SE as Pete on occasion would mention doing extra investigation say into checking the bottom end of my engine straight after he'd told me it was fine! LOL biggrin.gif

Not saying he was trying to rip me off...no way, but at the end of the day 400 squid here and 200 squid there soon mounts up and next thing you know you've got a 3rd world debt on yer hands.

However, if this is true about your turbos going West I would say that the recon figure is not bad. Just ask them who does the work?

When you find out drop me a mail asap. Not going into it on here!

I think I know the answer to that one - we discussed before. wink.gif

Anyway, I wouldn't go for the basic recon, I'd have the 360 deg thrust bearings.

I seem to recall we may have Andy...LOL biggrin.gif

Yep, probably right about the 360 degree aswell...if you're gonna spend on a basic rebuild you may aswell max 'em up at the same time! wink.gif

Thanks for the replies guys.

I did suspect that the turbos were on the way out, done 104k on origionals but with all the other problems found I was hoping to get away with them (for now anyway).

Andy.

I saw the 360 turbos but at an extra £224 can they really be worth the extra. Main use of car will be going up and down the M11 to work every day. I recon I’m in for about £4000 as it is.

Steve if you can stretch to the 360's then I'd say go for it! wink.gif

Make you go faster quicker if you know what I mean? As far as I know the turbos spool up alot quicker and the bearings are much better quality than stock etc.

I don't pronounce to know a great deal of detail about the upgrade, I did read about it somewhere ages ago but it is a good move without actually upgrading the entire turbos themselves not to mention cheaper! wink.gif

I would deffo see how much Johnny can get you some uprated blowers for before you pay that price on standards

Paul

Steve it depends on how far you want to go with tuning? Stock ones are fine if you are not going to go silly,Look how many miles you got out of your old ones wink.gif.Are you looking for more BHP???

I hear that 360 are great for track use. A smoother surface than a normal road causes the bearings to hold the blades in place very tightly.

This is where it is a problem for road use. Becuase our roads are uneven, pot holed, bumpy. This causes stress on the bearings because it is 360 and has no lea way for movment.

Others allows slight movment cuased by bumps and so on, causing less stress.

What I said is sounds shit but Ay3388 can explain it more.

Not really looking for mega power at this point (despite asking them to do boost upgrade and chip while they have it). But if there is a really good reason to pay a bit more for better turbos then obviously I would consider it.

Car to be used daily for work but lets face it, you can always use that little bit extra.

IMHO there is no noticeable performance gain to be had from 360 degree thrust bearings - it's simply there to keep everything in once piece when upping the boost.

I had them on my replacement turbos from SE and couldn't tell the difference. That was on 1 bar boost before and after.

I'm not saying they're a bad thing of course. You don't go faster with synthetic oil or a larger auto 'box oil cooler but that doesn't mean they're not sensible.

Steve if you are going for boost upgrade and chip, then go for 360s.

Althoug bear in mind youll never get good horsepower out of them and you will limit yourself.

If you have engine out my advise will be bigger blowers cause its just the done thing really. And youll regret it once you have been in another car with bigger turbos.

I suppose that depends upon what you mean by good horsepower. Standards will takes you to way above 400bhp - that's good enough for most people.

Stock blowers i think will take you to 400rwhp and no more without doing major damage to the turbines from what i understand. (i am probably wrong)

But if you look around youll find that aftermarket turbos from JWT ie sport 500s

http://www.jimwolftechnology.com/300turbo.htm

ie Avlon racing will rebuild them to sport 500 spec for about 690 squid all in and i have purchased goods form them before they are reliable and my goods came within one week.

Just a thaught.

Hi there Steve

I had my turbos recond about a year ago on my uk spec zed. It cost me £950.00 fitted. I saw the turbos before they went on the car and I could not believe that they were not new!!!. Universal turbos did the work and they were spotless. The cheapest route to go if the money is tight!!

Simon H

Universal Turbo?

is this the make or the garage... or generic Turbo eh eh eh

where?

Not sure if i made myself clear,. 690 SQUID from both turbos reconed to a higher spec.

You got a contact no for them Wazza?

Could be handy for future reference, any idea what spec they upgrade to?

Universal turbos did the reconditioning and Millway sport installed them.

Their Web Site is www.universal-turbos.com

The 360 thrust bearing will not as my old pal Hairsy so rightly pointed out improve the performance of the turbo - they will if anything have a slight negative impact on spool - to little to notice but you have increased the friction around the shaft - Do the Math.

So dont get 360 degree bearings then ?

Nope - Get them if you can afford them and plan to go over stock boost - they offer more robust thurst loading and more protection againt hot and cold seizure.

There are a million and one things you can do to turbos - I would seriously think abuot how far your want to go with the car before you spend the money - Stock turbos are only good for 17psi before you will need to upgrade the compressor wheels. If you are not already at Stage 3 (14psi) then i would reccomend you try that first - too many people are dreaming of high HP they will never be able to use !

Oh yes and from what i hear - without prejudice, allegedly Etc, and besides Peter R is too good a chap to worry about such things anyway - I have only heard good things about the SE Stock and 360 Rebuilt turbos. If that is the way you are planning to go - Note i have never used them myself so am not speaking from personal experience !

The absolute bare bones minimum I would do is stick a T3 wheel in a carved out stock compressor housing with the stock turbine wheel w a 360 degree bearing. That is the minimum. If your turbo builder knows what he is doing then you do not need a 360 degree bearing but the likelihood is you will. I have seen a T3 65 Trim compressor/stock turbine go forever in a Z which was pumping out 500hp constantly without a 360 degree. It hasn't whined, smoked, or popped and thats been like that for 4 years. BUT it wasn't rebuilt by a diesel turbo rebuilder wink.gif

You are seriously wasting your money if you put stock jobs back in unless you don't like horsepower (in which case why buy a Twin Turbo!)

I have to disagree with the guys here and say I would not consider rebuilding stockers if I was going to run them at stage 3 levels of boost (14psi and above), that is outside what they were intended to do.

To run stock boost rebuild for stock, to run higher boost then do the decent thing and put bigger wheel(s) in.

360degree bearings are only for reliability purposes.

I have seen too many people seriously wish they'd waited an extra 2-3 weeks to save the $$$ to put in bigger turbos.
