I have been reading the End of Oil by Paul Roberts. I haven't finished it - bit heavy for me, but basically it's giving the 'Green' opinion on how soon oil is going to run out and what's going to replace it. Who is worried about climate change - and how soon will it be before we won't be able to run a big zed-type car at all any more?

Are you concerned about the thought of oil running out? 27 members have voted

I can't foresee this happening in our lifetime and TBH even though very selfish I don't care. The oil giants will be hard at work manufacturing alternatives as they can't afford to go out of business so rest assured there will be some alternative available anyway!

The traditional fossil oil is going to end sooner or later, it's just a matter of time.

Ken

Not worried at all, there are plenty of alternatives like wind farms and other sources , but as the world is actually owned by the oil people right now, other alternatives are being blocked by them.

when it does run out they will no doubt own it with something else they have up their sleeve.

oil people and insurance companies...............they never lose a penny.

I think a few mods will be needed to get around the desert strucken British Isles. But i bet even in the midst of the nuclear aftermath our Chunkster will still organise a good meet. Fuel or not.

Even after reading some of the book I am no expert. One of the things he was saying was that it would take a LONG time to put in place an alternative energy and by that time there would be war/riots/anarchy (to simplify things too much). I think in a short time-span, like 30 years or so, personal transport will be very different and cars like ours will be pieces of history.

LoL at Viniboy's post!!

When we run out of oil and our cars use environmetally friendly energy do you think car tax will be reduced? Iask this as oly about 6% of our tax goes on the roads, and the rest is an incentive to stop motorists and make them favour public transport.....soooo if we are not polluting surely there is no need for high taxation. Will they cut tax however? Will they *****cks!

Fook the oil there is no more Guinness left in my cooler!!!!! :headvswal

 yeah and i've got 1 can of carlsberg left. Just not good enough is it? :(

And a cracking Mancunian bird in the adverts!!

Going back on-topic for a mo', even if oil does run out it's not the end of the internal combustion engine- we just have to up vegetable oil production as diesels can run on it. And I have to admit Diesels are getting a bit more pokey than they used to be...

But in the meantime I'll be burning the Optimax while it lasts! :D

Nuff said

peak oil was reached over 5 years ago, thats when you reach the maximum amount of oil you can produce in barralage per day, after that it goes downhill, as the only way to get the oil out is to pump water in at pressure to force the oil out then that becomes more expensive than manufacturing the oil by products.

opec etc.. announced peak oil had been reached earlier this year, and that it reached it 5 years ago, this was also reported on bbc news, sky , reiters. etc..

if you really want the low down on peak oil, the implications, and the course and action of the current state of the middle east then goto http://www.copvcia.com

notrh sea gas has been running out for the past 10 years, thats when peak rpoduction hit, however the government in their infinite wisdom decided to deny this was a possibilty, and now this winter the gas suppliers have finally admitted publicly that there isnt enough gas, not as the pm etc say due to not buying enough but the fact that there is none left in the north sea, thats why so much is imported as liguid gas. it wont be long before exporting countries no longer export due to their own supplies dwindling, then they say the next war will be an "energy war" based on getting hold of gas and oil reserves.

dont pray to god, cos these days god stands for gold, oil and drugs... money money money

something like 1/4 t0 1/3 of the worlds oil is to be found above the artic circle....recent drilling in greenland etc has uncovered oil fields bigger than Saudi Arabia biggest fields...getting to it is a bind but it will be done....nothing to worry about when it comes to running out...that book you refer to IIRC was written some years back and based on geology surveys which were then small because yields were better from the existing fields so why bother looking etc...once the yields fell the survey teams went out and found more...:)

the artic oil fields have been proven not to exist, however the main reason bush and the u.s wont sign the kyoto accord is they still want to look under the ice pack, the only way to do this is to let the thing melt.

goto the website i linked..

i also have some of mikes lectures here on cd if anyone wants one.. very scary and interesting stuff all of which is backed up by evidence.

ahh well here is the nub of the issue....having an agreed set of facts....and as you state they don't exisit...so i guess we are falling short on that point...well i've never been there (Arctic) with or without a drill so i cant add anything new to the debate....but being a devils advocate here it is worth noting Shell dont sell books for a living and when it comes to books a lot of folk believe anything Dan Brown writes is true also....anyways interesting stuff all the same
