When I first start the car in the mornings and at most times of the day from cold I get a horrid whining. It sounds like one of those crappy old cars going past howling. It stops after a few minutes but by then the damage is already done. Any ideas?

If it sounds like a goose then it may be your re-circ valves

yeah sounds like fan belt, hardly the fault of the century, just get it tightened or maybe at worst you'll need a new belt, all of a fiver or so :p

either your alternator belt ;)

or you have left the misses gaged up in the boot still

to solve this problem sell the z and the whining will soon be over :D

Thanks for the help boys. I was thinking of the fan belt myself actually. It can't be the missus cos I have her tied up in the house like all good girls should be. I shall look at tightening the belt first. On the car that is, not her.
