I would like to get the network between my two pc's running but not sure how to do it. I have an adsl modem/router which both pc's are connected to and both will be running a clean install of win2k pro. Can someone explain the easiest way to get them to comm with each other so I can swap files etc between the two, I have quite a good knowledge of pc's but networks baffle me a bit! At the moment both are online through the router but they can't comm with each other so any help will be much appreciated.

Erm not too sure about 2000, but in windows xp there is a "Setup and home or small office network" button, double click on the "My netwiork places" icon on the desktop, should help you out a little.

Alternatively share the hard drives on both computers (right click and properties in My Computer) and then search for the computer name of one PC from the other (to find out the computer names right click on my computer and then properties) and then create a shortcut to the hard drive on the other machine.

Both will have an IP address, given by the router.

One method is simply to map a drive to the other PC and share files that way. Both PC's should also be in the same Workgroup to simplify things...

If mapping a drive, you will need to specify the account that has rights on the PC you are connecting to..

As said above, the pc's will get ip addresses off of the router so will already be able to talk to each other. You just need to enable sharing either on the drive or on the folder and you will see it in 'my network places'.

To check the workgroups are the same: right click on my computer and check the computer name tab. If they arnt then change one to make it the same and restart computer.

To share a folder or drive: right click on it and go to sharing and security, tick enable sharing and tick the box to let users change the files (if you want that of course).

To access it from other computer: click on my network places and double click on the other computer icon. You should then see the shared drive/folder. You could then make a shortcut on your desktop if you wanted.

Send a pm if you need any help.Dave
