Did you choose a zed - or you just didn't have any more money?

After reading a few threads lately I wondered how many people on here wanted a 'cheap' performance car, and the zed was cheap, and how many chose it even though they could afford something much more expensive?

Who has moved on to something more expensive/new, and who has stuck with the zed? Who has wanted a zed for years, or owned one for years?

I don't earn big money so I couldn't afford anything exotic, but when I didn't have kids I did consider a Honda S2000 - I still like it, but I don't really want it. I like the fact that a zed isn't a twats car - but it's a common man's car not an insanely rich guy's toy. Although people keep suggesting it, I don't think it is a Chavmobile yet. But people still are very snobbish to me about it being a Nissan. The upkeep bills are not insane, like some cars, and it's not a posh granny wagon like some. However, it's still my mid-life crisis come (a bit) early.

I like the zed and as it gets a bit older- I think it only gets more individual, not unfasionable - however manky the one you drive is, it' s definately not just ANOTHER RX-8, is it.

So who's rich and could have anything they chose, but chose a zed, and who wants something more exotic but can only afford an old Nissan? How much have you put into the car in total? and what would that have bought you unmodded!

I chose the Zed - ever since I saw one back in 91 i've always wanted one - and now I have   Hve the money if I want something else, but i don't.

PS Rich: did the aerial turn up mate??????

I had not even considred buting a 300ZX i was looking for another Z28 Camaro but fancied something a little smaller and more secure and more practical to run around in (of which the Z is not !) Still glad i bought it as its my First Rice burner after loads of Rods and Yanks. Next car will be a Viper !!

wow a fair few questions there.

i dont earn a fortune but dreamed of a z for the last two years so i waited until the right one came about.

wouldnt want anything else unless i won the lotto then i probably would get it rebuit back to showroom condition with a few modern twists for good measure and then probably buy a modded turbo for track days ect.

I had a 98' 200sx s14a when I bought my 1st Z which supposedly a more 'desireable' modern car - & I coulda traded the sxin for good money for a soop and a GTO that where around, then I saw a Z on ebay that needed work and I remembered back to 1990 when I saw my first 300zx in Glasgow when i was standing in the rain at a bus stop and almost falling over at the beauty of the car. In 1990 I dont think any car I saw hit me like the Z *awesome*

It was a no brainer.

Had to sell mine

BUt I will be Zedded once more in the near future

Apache- I PM'd you a while ago - I don't know yet: didn't want to get on the paintshop's back too much. I am phoning them in the morning to check how it's going and ask about the aeriel. First thing I'm doing when I get it back is taking a few photos, including the working aeriel!! Cheers, mate - you sorted it out quick EVEN THOUGH you were working till the middle of the night. Once again, cheers for that. Hope I haven't sent the PM off to someone completely unrelated!!

No worries mate - hope it all turns out OK - can't wait to see the pix

READ MY JOURNAL.

I have for many years liked ..No loved the 300ZX. I just never got around to buying one. The cheap sports car thing wasnt an issue because to be honest I never had a clue that they were so fast anyway. It took almost a year to get around to buying my beloved. When I saw it I went and got the loan and bought it. From that day forward I have been learning new things about the car and since joining this club learned just how much of a following it has. I never imagined it would be so popular?

i chose the zed because ever scine i was a youngster i saw one of these in a car showroom , 1 yr after they came out, was red uk twin turbo.,. and loved it ever scince, but money dictated, i couldnt get one then ,, but i looked seriously in 2002 when i had spare 9k , 4 yrs tax rebate, and almost bought a 93 tt uk for 8k , but the misses dictated to me ,, know way,! lol so bought a rover ti , for 4k spent 3 k keeping the thing in gearboxes and elec window regs, and abs pumps, so got rid after one year then bought a pug, then swapped me mpv for a zed, when the offer came up couldnt refuse, , so did it   bought a zed  not looked back scince, ,,, but will admit, :smash: ive had problems like any other average zed owner, but will be worth it when done, :duffer: :duffer:

I remember loving the Z when I was at school but then time went by and thought little aboout car ownership as a student and forgot all abloout the Z. Had a few cars and finally got a dream car, a Lotus Elise. I started thinking, there was too much money tied up in one car so I sold her and the search began for reasonably priced super cars. Granted I set a budget of £4500 and the search started. Looked at Supra's - too expensive to maintain. Scoobies - couldn't get the RA model for the right money, GTO's again expensive maintainance. Aah the Z, I remember that, and reignited the smouldering embers! Here I am today.

I sold my NA, but every day I missed being out in it, and I had to get another. I'm no big car expert, but I've never liked way out exotics that I never could dream to drive, or were expected to be kept in an air-conditioned garage 360 days a year. I still think there is something vauguely 'bad' about not running a car as much as you can. I never wanted a museum piece, but on the other hand I do regret using my last zed so much, as it was close to factory condition when I got it.

Never wanted a pure drag car, but I didn't want a little squitty sports car, and didn't have the skill to build something up from rust like a little MG. I liked Richard Hammond's description something like 'a big wobbly thing for carrying fat americans around' or whatever he said. The big fat over-the-top look of the zed appeals to me.

I had a GTO and a Soarer, and I think the Soarer is built better than any car I've driven before. Says more about my experience of cars than what the car is like I suppose. I like the fact that Jap cars are more for ordinary people - reliability and price-wise, not an unattainable dream.

I was looking for a toy which had to be Nissan and turbocharged as I love Nissans. Very nearly bought a R33 Skyline GTS-M but with it being a 2nd car I needed to start another insurance policy and the group 20 import insurance was huuuuugggeee. Did some investigations into alternatives and the 300zx ticked the boxes:

1)Nissan

2)Turbocharged

3)Good looking

4)Fast

And as well as that mines a UK car so pay £280 a year insurance! So I'm not a true Z-car enthusiast but I'm happy :)

i wanted one since i was a young nipper and wouldn't change it. if i had millions i would still have it and do a jun 261 mph conversion just for the crack of pissing over £1,000,000 super cars

I consider myself lucky i'm not drooling over the newest beamer in top gear magazine, and other cars which i couldn't afford even if i wanted one.

I will never love any car as much as I love the 300zx. cars often come up at work and guys talking about how much they would love a this or that. But they will never own them.

I have two stinking rich cousins who own a nightclub.. One drives a brand new bentley continental GT, the other a ferrari 360. But there's no passion, they are just status symbols.....They will never have the enjoyment out of them that I have with my humble 300zx....

Totally aggree! And I like it that people just don't know what it is you're driving.

i wanted one bought one

i now work on them

Wanted a 300zx for years and years, since they were still in production in the UK.

I only got the chance to buy one, once my Wife started driving and I could then have my toy. Could of bought something a lot more expensive, but the Zed was the car I wanted, and it left all that money for Treating it (where did all that money go !?).

I love it, and there is'nt anything I would buy for less than 25k (second hand, probably 50k+ new) that I would replace it with, and I would rather spend £25k on the zed tbh. Intend to keep it for as far as I can imagine, making changes to it as I go. My daily driver(or the "wifes" car, as she puts it;) is the car I'd swap and change over the years)

yes, They are cheap now/currently (too damn cheap) , but when new they were very expensive.

Joe public generally does'nt have a clue what it is. They usually just stare and point, before asking. :)

Nissan prejudice - Yes, have a friend who looked down on the Badge. But a brief history on the Z-car range, Racing heritage and the cars the Zed rivals and he soon changed his mind. Its a shame that Nissan are only generally known for their dull but reliable hatchbacks and saloons in the UK, they are so much more than that.

I bought my Zed because I couldn't find a good enough MGC or MGB V8!

MG because I wanted a sports car with class

MG Midget - had one

MGB - too slow

MGRV8 - unaffordable

MGC / MGB V8 - ah that's better. 3 or 3.5l classic tin but couldn't find one.

Wait a mo' - wasn't there a classic Datsun: Z something? Ooooh yes

Auto Trader - blimey, what's that? 300ZX never heard of it.

Test drive - vroooooom love at first sight and that was 6 years ago :D

Modded fords for shows for years and wanted to TT one but would of cost me a lot of money so looked at alternatives ;) My dad had one in 1990 so started looking.

Heard that there was a site called 300 zx.co.uk so did alot of research and found Luke and my Zelda  wanted to mod it to my own tastes which i have done and spent a fair amount doing so ;)

As for other cars i also have a new SAAB 9-3 Convertable 2.0T a Pug 206 GTI and a Bike GSX1400, so if i thought about it i could of got a completely different Super car for the money i have spent ;) But nope i wanted a Zed and i got one

Oooooh and i love the fact people dont know what it is aswell unless you are in the know ;) :D

Saw it, liked it, bought it. If i won the lottery would still keep me zed, theres no other car when you're on the road with that 'in your face' stance and no greater joy than knowing most people haven't got a clue what it is.

THEY CAN ALL BOW TO THE KING OF THE ROAD. THE ZED 32

i started life with the Silvia, then 200sx and had to have the Daddy! 300zx, had her for a few years now and the only thing i'd change it for would be a 1972 240Z, other than that i can't think of another car i'd change the 300ZX for, ooooh other than a Jag XK8.....

was gonna buy a torero kit car from parallel designs, but work stopped that, then got married and the rest followed on from that...

swapped my big ass 4x4 for my zed fell in love with it on sight!

not had any serious problem with it, drives very fast.. and i love it

bonus to find out its a rare model being a jap 2str swb the guy didnt know what he had .. but the best thing about owning it... being a part of this club!! thanks guys.

I got my first Zed in 1993 then my current one in 1997 (when they still cost loads of money!) Loved them since I first spotted one in the early 90s

Always loved them. Supra is just a bit too boy-racerish for my liking. Did consider a Skyline (because obviously they're not in any way boy-racerish), but to get a really decent one you're talking a lot more than a zed: the problem with the Skyline is that it really doesn't look much until it's been kitted. Still, maybe one day. But I'll keep the zed.

In fact what I'd do if I suddenly came into a ton of cash, which isn't going to happen, is this: get my zed modded to blazes, with a full bodykit and respray in pearl black, some nice new alloys, a new interior, and of course I'd do a macca on the engine... and in the meantime I'd get a Skyline as my daily driver. Dream on, eh? ;)

and of course I'd do a macca on the engine...

A Macca engine kicks arse LOL;)
