Try re-seating all the components (RAM, Graphics card, leads to hard drive/cd roms ect) actualy unplug and then replug, not just check they are in.

then try again

if all those are ok, then I would say fried motherboard...

First thing to try would be to unplug power from the base unit, hold the power button in for 10 secs, then replug power and try starting up again... This is some kind of ATX reset - I'm fuzzy on the details (translation: knowledgable people, please don't jump on me for my vague layman understanding :P), but sometimes it seems ATX mobos collect a trickle of charge over time which can prevent them posting. The reset clears this, and would be the first thing I'd try if it's been sat a while plugged into the mains.

Otherwise, unplug everything but the basics (keybd, mouse, monitor) and try again. Do you get any beeps at post? Do you usually get any?

Hmm so much for a disclaimer... all I know is that we used to get alot of people with no post, and doing this would often sort the issue, especially if it was a PC that hadn't been started up for a while. Pssht, I don't pretend to know the reason, just that it's worth trying because it only takes a moment :(

when i took of side and tried pushed in the connectors, then restarted i got 1 long beep. Havent tried anything since as im at work and pc is at home.

Some components may be fried if there was a energy spike in the network when you where away..

Defo unplug all but the processor, RAM, VGA card. The try booting. It should complain about no hard drive but that is a good sign...Provided you get POST with just the basics in then it is not too bad. If you still getno POST then likely oneof the 3 bad guys MOBO, PROC or RAM...

HTH

one long beep is usually because the pc is not detecting any ram in the pc try removing the ram memory and replug it see how it goes, if it still wont boot up reset the cmos usually a jumper by the battery on the board

How old is the pc? It may simply be the BIOS battery on the motherboard needs replacing, its just a watch battery, can get them from most supermarkets / camera / swatch shops, dead easy to fit. If its the ram or processor you are likely to get the long beeeeeeeeeeeep.

Did you earth yourself properly before touching the RAM? Or shuffle your feet before or while touching it? Static is a killer, before you go inside the pc, the best bet is to take the side off, turn it on, touch the chasis or psu case, and then keep your feet still while working on it (turn off pc first obviously)

reset cmos, before starting, disconnect both ide cables from the board, this will rule out a defunct hardrive, some drives when failing will stop the board from powering up as it is basically returning a short across the power rail, this will switch the relay in the psu over and stop power to the board.

if it boots into the post then its your drive, usually no ram is several beeps of the piezo in the pc.

PC was new in March this year. Somebody at work mentioned that bristol had a power cut on sunday, but my neighbours pc seems fine.

i got a wrist strap which i use when working on the pc so hopefully ive not blown it up myself lol.

...while standing on your head and whistling...

could be the power supply

you should be able to find someone near by who will charge you something in teh region of 20-25 quid to do a diagnosis, they usually have all the testing equipment and spare parts to try it out. I'd recommend that if you don't really know what you are doing

if it is your psu or another component let me know and i will do you a replacement at trade ;)
