intro:

my engine is goosed and you may have seen my request for an engine in the items for sale section.

i've recently heard of the VH45DE engine which can can be used as a replacement.. ive looked up this engine on the internet and have found out that it is normally aspirated and that the engine is not available in a turbocharged version but can be supercharged. the engine itself is 4.5litres V8 unit which provides a dramatic increase in the torque as compared to the VG30DE counterpart.

here is my dilema:

i) the engine will provide endless amount of torque but is it really justified as a replacement for the VG30DETT engine as both engine provide the same amount of BHP as standard

ii) Both can be uprated to give a better performance but are the cost of uprating the engine output simmilar?

e.g if i wanted to increase the Bhp to 550 i would need bigger injectors, air intake, better tubs possible new pistons in the VG30DETT engine but how would that compare to the VH45DE?

iii) if the VH45DE is a superior engine to the VG30DETT then why is it cheaper on ebay?

iv) most importantly what is the process required to place a VH45DE engine into a J Spec twin turbo as far as labour costs go and what would i need to change eg gearbox (mine is manual)

this question shoul be a good one for the more mechanically mindedd.

and one more thing would it increase the fuel consumption? cos the weight to power ratio decreases hence i would think the fuel consumption would go down....and before you say anything I dont want to drive a Ford Fiesta :D .. im not worried about fuel as such but just a thaught :duffer:

thanx for all your responses (I Hope)

Funny you should mention that ....

Doing this my self at the minute, but TBH if you're not going to do the work yourself, then it's going to be very expensive. It's by no means a straightforward swap. Having said that it will still cost less than a full VG build up including manifolds, intercoolers etc.

It's horses for courses really and depends what you want from your car. If you want numbers to impress people with and bragging rights down the pub, then stick to the turbo. If you want a car that drives well and has that immediate throttle response and linearity that a turdo engine can just never have, then go for the V8.

Fuel consuption won't increase either. The VH45 is lighter, and NA engines need less fuel for the same air flow than turbos (ratio is about 4.7/5.7 from memory).

whats it gonna cost? rough figures if i have it done at a garage?

So you want me to get you a VH now instead of buying my VG? Lol! ;) Only joking mate :D Didn't realise you were interested in the conversion when we spoke via email :)

BTW, Christ knows what it would all cost if a garage did it as there's a lot of work involved. Plus, how far you want to take the engine will of course effect the final cost...my V8 set-up is "milder" than Johns (hoping for around 400-450bhp). Whereas his engine, in technical tuning terminology...is madder than a bag of badgers  ;)

still considering both options.... first of all i need to learn to thrash the car safely :D to get the full potential of the basic engine first. better talk to Jeremy Clarkson now eh? :D :smw: :x:

I'll tell you in a few months!

There are some fairly expensive bits like Dry sump pump, ECU, throttle bodies, exhaust manifolds etc. Labour, I probably wouldn't do it for less that £2.5k if someone asked because it's such a ball ache.

provides a dramatic increase in the torque as compared to the VG30DE counterpart.

VH45DE V8

278bhp

292 ib-ft

Dramatic Increase ?? Thats about the same for bhp and Torque as the standard TT engine (VG30DETT)

Throttle response would be crisper and with a more linear power delivery as mentioned though. Its an appealing idea, and Im looking forward to seeing the results of the V8 conversions currently in progress.

Yes, NA engines neve generate the same sort of torque as charged ones, VG with boost upgrade will monster it for torque. Some of the VH's with non-standard headers / cams are making 400-450bhp depending on spec though.

Bloody hell John thats a bit unfair I dont go down the pub bragging what BHP my car is throwing out :( I don't give a monkeys foreskin about numbers although to date my car is probably the most powerfull that this forum has ever seen with still shit loads left to unlock.

I built my car for absolute AWESOME mid range and that is something a N/A can never deliver.

when did john mention your car mac?

as it says horses for courses :D

He was refering to Turbo cars and that is not why I built mine

so what BHP is your zed kicking out? just for general knowledge. does a monkey really have foreskin?lol :D

Wasn't talking about yours Ian, it's just my take on it, never wished you anything but luck with it. I personally hate turbo engines because of the way they deliver the power. As I said personal preference. You're right, there's no way an NA (unless its an 11 litre) is going to deliver the sort of torque yours will. On the other hand, there's no way an turbo can deliver the sort of response and drivablity of an NA, which is why I'm building mine.

We hit a brick wall because the stock pump cant flow another drop so 504.8 rwhp,The maps we have used are still on the safe side so there is plenty more to be had once we can supply enough fuel.

LOL no problem, tell you what then you gona hate mine with a passion when I take you out in it,because when the tubs spool and hit boost it gives me the biggest kick up the arse I have ever felt and don't stop pulling hard until you hit the limiter at just over 8k all you are looking for something to grab onto.
