This really is a simpleton's question, but can someone explain to me in really simple dense people's language what the overdrive button does, and also what power and hold are for. I kind of have a vague idea that the power button holds the revs at a certain level but I really don't have a clue. I don't know either how you are actually supposed to use them when driving. I would be very grateful to anyone who could explain it to a moron.

I'm not sure how smooth the auto gearchange should be. I seem to remember on my auto Soarer it was very smooth - so much so that I can't remember noticing when it changed up at all. On the 300 I can feel it change and the note of the revs change - is this normal?

Once again appologies for real dunces questions here.

Overdrive on is 4 speed box

Overdrive off is 3 speed box (better for urban driving)

Power allows it to rev higher before changing gear

Hold will hold it in the same gear ie: snow/ice conditions (iirc)

Try o/d off & power on, it's fun!

Does o/d off give better fuel consumption round town?

Cool... I'll have to give it a go! How does that work then?

As the box is 3 speed with o/d off, the gear ratios are different, therefore

you can stay in the same gear longer, not labouring the engine with

going up & down gears as often, thus saving fuel.

It'll also be a lot better to drive too.

Nice one thanks dude, I honestly didn't know that, thick as I am!

Hi

You might try an ALC its a divise that controls the oil pressure within an auto box and assists the gear change

Someone else might explain it better than me I am no expert on Automatics

Great thanks for that. So:

Power = fast driving, bigger revs (like in a manual waiting until nearer the red line before changing)

O/D off = town

O/D on = motorway/out of town

hold = snow and ice

Might look into those ALC thingies, John cheers :duffer:

In my rex I used to use "hold" to kinda change manually...

Basically I would pull off in 1st (L), and switch hold on immediately (hold before pulling off would make you pull off in 2nd)... Then I would shift manually at max revs into 2nd, 3rd - This gives the best acceleration IMO...

Don't know if it is the same in a zed!

Sounds more complicated than a manual. That seems like it's defeating the object of an automatic? I've quite enjoyed putting my foot down and driving in an even more relaxed way than usual, kind of lying down. I keep pressing my left foot on the foot rest thingy after I have been on the break and having a mild second of panic when I can't feel the clutch go down...

It sounds it but its quite simple really...
