Norton Internet Security is pretty painless. 2005 version...

http://www.download.com I think, you can search for firewall and then see which ones get best rating, some are freeware, some are try before you buy but there areother sites that will help you with the codesif you know what I mean?

DO a search for XAliasX on google etc

Lots of free stuff going there...wink wink..

norton is crap.. mcaffee is crap.. if you want something other than zone alarm, by the way zone alarm pro suite is the only one to have then the best app to get is a british one.

its a full suite, and it updates itself every hour, it finds new viruses that norton, mcafee, or avg wont. its compatible with xoftspy, ad-aware, and sys mechanic pro.

grab it from here http://www.kaspersky.com/trials?chapter=159339192 and install, restart, then connect to internet and let it update and then scan, also get the latest xoftspy and ad-aware, i reccomend xoftspy as the makers work with ad-awares makers in matching the products and xoftspy finds things you wont find with other spy checkers, it also finds trojans, malware, dialers, worms, hotbars, and browser hijackers. get it here

also window washer by webroot is great for getting rid of every form of temp file on your pc, freeing up a few gig of space at a time usually get it here

i install these items on all my clients machines simply due to the fact that when i do a maintainence call i know for certain the machines will be clean. virus free, and no crap will be anywhere in the machines.

Never had any issues with Norton...and I have used since 2003..

Zonealarm may be your choice..but that is your opinion...I used it some time ago and thought it so crap I uninstalled it..

Me too since 2000 so trouble free in 5 years looks a good choice to me.

Zone alarm is good. You probably didnt have it set up correctly

plain and simple fact. most trojans and viruses now activate on boot up this way they interfere with norton etc upon startup that way they dont see the viruses running in the background at all.. common knowledge im afraid.

try kaspersky and see what that finds.. its free so your ok, and will work

Norton internet security is fantasic in my personal experience, have been running it / upgrading it / maintaining it on my dad's work pcs since 1999 and never had a single problem to this day, the pc's are switched on and connected to the net 24/7 as well :) think you can get it for bout £30 with a years worth of updates too online :D

i have had problems with norton i have had most of the doom and trogen viruses even though i had norton. as for spyware try adaware :

i like this one, i find it good at finding tracking cookies also try microsoft antispy (its on there site) and bt yahoo do one on there site they are all free and i have had no probs since on my pc.

if any of you have had any problems with any of these id like to know thanks

Again, this is a configuration problem. I have used it for years and if anything is blocked, its very easy to set it to allow it through.

The fact that it is blocking it shows that it is working better, and that all the ports used for normal internet use are closed.

Add the port to the exceptions list on Zone Alarm.

Norton

i know that m8 but if u are trying to file share over a LAN it blocks it

i personally dont like it

Zone alarm sucks...maybe the new version is better but the old version was sooo bad..

Norton is easy, reliable and works..

Trojans activating on boot up means that your AV and firewall is not working as it obviously allowed them in in the first place.

Norton would have alerted to this and has done for me.

I am an IT Manager for a high street bank and have tested all in the name of security and know what works for us...

IMHO

as most of you know i have worked for most of the known computer system manufacturers, from designing eproms and risc chips, to compiling code and alpha & beta testing.

i still travel to microsoft uk and apple uk for regular os information and code groups etc..

there are several viruses and trojans that do in fact reside in bios, there are some that can re-write the bios, there are viruses and trojans that can re-write your drives bootblocks, current trojans and worms are now able to bypass all security features on a systems startup, the new code can only become active if a computer , mainframe or server system is shutdown and restarted. Most mainframes, servers are not shut down in any instance as this would disrupt all company activity.

SSL encryption was thought to be totally failsafe until it was cracked two years ago, since then the ssl encryption has been upgraded and is regularly checked everymonth. Unfortunatly most common forms of encryption still are based on fibbonaci sequences, this in turn relies on a xor based key string, you can work a xor string in this manner 8 seed, 16bit string, with a 128bit fractal encryption algorythm, this rotates over a varied sequence that in turn generates a rotated encrypted xor seed that cannot be reverse sequenced in the normal method, however by implanting a worm all sequences can be recorded and duplicated by the worm which in turn can be accessed by the person who plated it, in such case finding the "primmer" or source key .

There is no such thing as an unbreachable computer system, the only way to stop that is to have what is known as a cold terminal, this is a terminal that is totally seperate to all other terminals, is not linked to nay data input network, has no outside means of data input, this would be placed in a locked or cold room as defined by this terminology.

I have installed several cold terminals for several well known companies, access to which is restricted to only a few people. the encryption on these machines is based on 512 and 1024 bit fractal encryption, this is classed as military grade encryption.

Most banking institutions use for its public domain the standard ssl128bit encryption, however most word bank clearing houses use 512bit internal encryption for internal transfers, and this is not common knowledge to in house IT support engineers as most are not trained for this level of access. The bank of england uses only 1024bit encryption in its systems this is based around a floating point sequence that has unique string identifiers linked to all primmers and keys.

when i install a mainframe i also set up a clone node, this node has software that checks the bios, post and boot sequence on intialisation, if any change is logged the system node scans removes and re-writes the correct code in one go, thus returning the system to a clean "cold state". if the code cannot be replaced the node takes over operations for a set period of time and an automatic pager kicks in to alert the technician.

when i or my techs install a system we also carry tools and software that we use to test known breaches or brute force entry methods into secure systems.

we still havent got into one yet...

however i can install upto 30+ trojans worms or viruses on any computer and guarantee that norton, avg, mcaffee, kasperski, will not find any of them. the best way to stay safe is to be safe from the first install.

for the average home use kaspersky is fine and will perform much better than the known brands, norton cant check bios or bootblocks also most of the pre boot sequence viruese, and worms are running before norton or mcaffee starts to load, so this has nothing to do with it not working properly at all. The pre boot code re-writes sectors of nortons boot code as it starts to load into memory, thereby replacing certain parts of the detection sequence, this in turn renders them useless and unable to scan or remove the worm etc that is running undetected.

i can go on but i hope this clarifys things
