Yep, thats true. Since a couple of months back (depends on where you live) pirated Windows' can't be updated (Security updates will still be available) It is kind of easy to get past this though, but I personally wouldnt do it beacuse it wouldn't be fun to get a nice little law suite from M$ :)

oh, and just to add to my previous post; the chance to get caught is minimal.. there are thousands and thousands of people using illegal copies of Windows. Don't quote this, but i remember right I've read somewhere that in Asia every second to 1/3 of all windowses are pirated versions (M$ is selling Windows there for a couple of pennies to stop this, and we just pay more and more every day). I'm glad I get as many legal copies I need for my personal use for free from my employer.

The cheapest legal way is to get am OEM copy. In theory these should only be provided with new PCs, but pretty readily available.

£90 or thereabouts

get a copy of professional and use a corporate code, they will always have spare licences on them, so updates not a problem.

Limewire ;)

There are key generators. But even if you get a corp version you may not be able to get windows updates.

I can do you xp and supply service pack 2 on a backup with codes.......pm if you want it. (I have no shame  )

I have a copy of XP pro, with code that I used until I got 64bit. Never had an issue updating, it even went through the MS validation on web site....

Will be sending a copy to Vijay tomorrow...

just so you know, when you do a windows update now, microsofts servers have changed, you will have to download the genuine validation tool prior to any update, after which it will validate your copy of xp, if it does not validate your ip is transferred to microsofts anti piracy division, and you can expect to be contacted by them.

the server change was notified to all registered microsoft m.c.s.e engineers at the beginning of the year, as now anything prior to xp-sp1 is no longer supported by updates. All legacy products are archived as microsoft has completed the 5 year support limit and by curtesy kept support for a few years more.

I have had numerous clients bring their machines to me as they bought them second hand with cracked copies of xp pre-installed only to find they could not upgrade online, and had then been contacted by microsofts anti piracy division threatening legal action. They have since reported, a certain computer shop for selling these items to them and that shop is now under investigation.

I would strongly recommend that you do not try to upgrade with a non-legal xp. the validation tool will not allow you to continue if your xp is not genuine, remember when you copy or clone a copy of xp that the cd code changes, this is the code the validation tool checks.

Turn off the automatic update and the send error report and you should be fine.

Nope.

sending error has nothign to do with it. This is if you want to run the updates yourself. You can use your windows as normal with out any patches but your computer is more at risk.

as above error reporting has nothing to do with it..

the validation tool is an app that now must be installed and varified before you are allowed to update, no way around this im afraid.
