Hi people

I am new to the jap car scene and have decided to ask for advice from the people most knowledgable.......the owners.

For the past two years I have been driveng a Rover 620ti and the gearbox has just gone ( a common problem for the 620ti)

have been looking at a list of my next cars and have got it down to two.

Mitsi 3000gto

300zx

Now, the Z seems a nice car but there are a few things that i dont like about it.

1, Most i have seen are autos :( and the gearbox is a weak link ( serious sence of deja vue there)

and 2, Most I have seen are autos ,hehe

What i could do with is some advice from other auto zx drivers in to what they have found with the cars if poss.

Many thanks in advance

Kev

If you want a manwell then hold out till you find one. They are rarer and that is reflected in the price. Autos are fine if you like that kind of thing but worth uprating the oil cooler. I'm sure someone with an auto can shead more light for you.

The Mitsi is a munter IMO! (And handles like a bag of shit)

Not that I am biased or anything!

Hi and Welcome :)

If your really dont want an Auto, then get a Manual ;) Yes they are rarer (about 70% are Auto), but I would'nt say they are Rare compared to the Auto.

The Auto is however a well designed unit, with no performance loss compared to the Manual version. Its essentially a strong unit, but just does'nt have the reliablity the manual offers over time with uprated power.

Obviously were going to be biased against the Mitsu here, but in all honesty the reason I choose the Zed over the Mitsu was that every single review that ever compared them said the Zed was far better!. (plus I think they are ugly)

The Mitsu is just not the drivers car that the Zed is. Too many gadgets that make it dull to drive and its too overweight, Its interior is plasticky and it lacks the longstanding "Z" heritage.

Obvoiusly it has the wet weather grip advantage, but despite the 4WD it does'nt handle as well (proven with track times) and the extra weight and transmission losses affect its straight line performance.

choose wisely, if u want an auto im sure there are uprated boxes

myself-i went for a manual for one reason id only driven a manual and an auto had never appealed to me, and i didnt want to take the risk

ive never looked back i love it and from what ive heard the manual is a better drivers car

as for the mitsi, well i bought a zed nuff said lol

i have a manual as well

i prefer them to autos

DONT GET A GT

they are crap and ugly

Hi there, i like my auto its less stressfull to drive

in traffic and i can just floor it and concentrate

on driving and not farting about with changing

gears,but each to their own

Was in a similar situation as yourself 4 years ago, had the choice of 3 Wicked cars, Mk4 Supra, 300ZXTT, GTO 6spd - Supra was slightly and i mean slightly quicker than the 300ZXTT, and the GTO looked nice but was slow in comparison to the other 2 and to heavy... Bought the 300ZXTT UK Manual over the Supra because it was £4000 cheaper and like everyone says there rare as rocking horse Sh1t and a much better all round car In my opion.. GTO's look great and was really nice to drive but it's more of a long distance tourer than and out and out sports car!! Supra reminded me of my old S12 Silvia - very quick but sequental turbos didn't do it for me. A la RX7

my mind was made up when i was 18 to get one lol

when i turned 25 the chance to get one came up

a really good friend was selling one

wernt sure it was the right choice as i was getting a house at the same time but a m8 said " if u dont get one now u never will, just do it"

that was it, took the plunge and it was the best thing i ever did

picked up a MINT 90 TT manwell for 3k

Thanks for your help peeps

My grudge with the autos is the sluggish response you get with some of em but i have heard you can get your auto box uprated by Ztech or even a Manual conv dont to the car , any of you had this done and if so whats the result like?

mine is an auto converted to manual.......no probs and ALOT more fun IMO.

its still for sale?? :D :D

Welcome, my Zed was the first auto I had ever owned and I was very dubious about getting one like you, all I would say is try and take one for a test drive, we all have different likes dislike but try before you buy as I love mine now. Is it a weak point? yes some people have had problems with them but then again, if 70 % are autos then you are going to read about more problems with them?? mines been no problem so far, uprated cooler was fitted as soon as I got the car.

would agree with above post,

some love em some hate em.

TBH it wasnt too bad when it was an auto, it was just that i did have alot of probs with the box as have many others. but then as has been said, 70% are autos so you will here of alot more probs with these over the manuals.

still say getting it converted to manual was the best thing i ever did to this car!

The Zed Autobox does'nt really suffer from the "sluggish" nature in the same was lesser cars do with Autobox's. Its a responsive unit, and the engine has altered cam profiles and turbo's compared to the manual, to improve response.

You can also get a ALC fitted, which improves response further.
