Are totally standard Zeds more reliable than modded ones? Mine is standard at the mo - If I chipped it, and added decent induction and a zorst, how would this affect the reliability? Are all Zeds equally as good at breaking down mods or no mods? Sorry if this seems like a thick question!!!

Depens if you mean original bits or just standard spec. Lots of old components on a standard Zed, where as modded ones have usually had all the obvious bits replaced. I guess if all the bits were the same age then a non modded one would be more reliable?

mines been more reliable since it was modded as most of the modded bits replaced standard bits tha went wrong lol

as long as all the work is done correctly, then modded 'should' be as if not more reliable!

But Servicing is the key to reliability! :D

I would say stock is going to be more reliable than one thats been played with.

Yeah thats what I thought - I know rotaries are a totally different ball game but even putting a zorst on one can potentially knacker it without upgrading the apex seals etc... This is craziness (hence why I got rid of mine), but at the end of the day thay are both fragile high performance twin turbos so I was wondering if there is anything I should be wary of in particular when ****ing about with the engine!?

Forgot to mention I was on about RX7s! (Obviously!)

IMHO any car that is 13yrs+ is going to present a degree of unreliability. Mine is pretty standard (mechanically) and so far in 13 months I've had to replace the starter motor (precautionary), the radiator and the battery. This is in addition to standard consumables like tyres, wipers, bulbs etc. Look after it, keep checking it and carry out preventative maintenance and you will minimise any potential trouble. Above all ENJOY having a Zed :D

Will it affect reliablity...well running a "resonable" amount of increased boost on an otherwise stock engine could affect reliablity...will it affect it to the point of it being noticably more unreliable...I very much doubt it.

The zed Fragile like the Rx7 ?....No, not at all, the far opposite IMO !.

Many are at the age/mileage however , like any car, where things that are due to go wrong, can start to go wrong, unless already rectified.

One thing to add, is that a Decat, can "potentially" affect reliablity...If the turbo's are already on the way out, this "can" send them over the edge (reduced backpressure affecting worn turbo oil seals)

..oh and if its a Manual your after, then the Clutch can start to give up once boost is increased. If its an Auto....well that gets really expensive :x:

Kool - Thanks for the advice matey, its reassured me dude! My girlfriend said my rex was gonna be my last supercar - Yeah right!

I'm praying nothing goes wrong in the first month or so, otherwise she won't be a happy girly! I'm sure all will be good though.... :D

as said make sure the car is sorted 1st brakes and cooling is the most important things to cover even before you start doing other stuff

induction-airflow isnt a problem its making the engine breath properly the first mod to do after you have covered the above, its ok adding 40-50 hp but when the engine is under increased load/temps lots of 14yr old parts are put under more strain turbos/drivetrain

if you have the money tune it if you cant afford to leave it,although leave some money aside for any issues servicing

not in this order but along these lines if yo were to spend money :D

full service inc cambelt s plugs, filters etc

induction

aftermarket gauges water oil boost

exhaust/decat

brakes

clutch[manual]

ecu chip

boost increase jets/controller

koyo radiator or similar

suspension shocks,springs,bushes

intercoolers

injectors

forged internals pistons

turbos

engine managment

remap rolling road

new bank manager :D

As said by the above. maintenance is the key to a good Z, the peeps & traders giving info on bits, projects, mods or even what oil to use is priceless.

Mod vs stock reliabilaty depends on what & how you fit them - who owned the car before etc etc.

Whatever you decide to do ask on here first, because someone here has done it before & can give a little piece of mind :) or tell you to cut the chip out of plastic & save the card for a frosty morning

harve

I aint no expert on all things ZED as a lot of you know but.....I would go by the philosophy. If you use it up you will wear it out? :duffer:

If its an auto, do the cooler upgrade as said above 'it gets very expensive'. I know :headvswal . Apart from that its like any car of its age. As long as its had the regular services ie. oil change. :D

all i can say mate is more power you put through the car the less reliable the car becomes, (FACT) F1 engines, there looky if they get 2 races out of it,

karl

just wondering, you were saying about decat's that they can send worn turbo's over the edge does this mean if i put new tubs on and decat would they last as long as if i wasn't to decat

stewiedoom1.gif

OOHHH decat and tubs dying after took 48 hrs for my tubs to die after decat.

sniff sniff sniff, hence no zed now sniff nsiff sniff

yip, a wise man once told me 'oil is a cheap mechanic' and its true.

you shouldnt just replace, but improve, its about making it better, not faster or quicker. no point having a quick car if its never out the garage. its about a ballance between the two.

for instance, a bigger oil cooler is a mod, but it helps the engine/gearbox, whatever, its more of an improvement, but its still a mod. its been said thats its an expensive mod, but if for some reason the cooler failed then its not all that much extra. there would be no point replacing every bit that moves for no reason, just to improve it..

any way enough sh1t fae me im getting another guiness
