Hands up who's had a 60K service done.

I'm just getting this sorted for mine and I'm trying to work out if it's worth changing the tensioner. It's £250+ if I buy one from Nissan UK or $125 from Courtesy.

If you've had a 60K belt change did you get the tensioner renewed?

Comments or experiences please

Tim

When they rebuilt mine last year they did replace it?

I'd recommend you ALWAYS replace the tensioner (and the bolts, and the waterpump)

My waterpump threw in the towel around 42K, so I had the belt changed at the same time, but not the tensioner.

When I did my 60k I replaced both, water pump & tensioner.. No discernable difference between old a new - perhaps the new water pump was a little easier to turn..

The main thing was that the old tensioner was almost at full extension.. The new one is done properly (~~4mm extension)

I've just replaced my timing belt £57 to buy from Nissan. Job (diy) took 9 and a half hours on day one and 7 hours on day 2 - first time I've done one. I did it because my car is a Jap import with no servicing details so I've always been worried about the belt. The belt I removed looked in good nick as did the tensioner etc. so I examined and re-set the tensioner to the 4mm spec. £250 is an enormous amount for what is just a spring and a pulley. Real question is, is the tensioner replaced just because of the time it takes to get to it - so you might as well etc, or do they wear out. I think it's the former. I hope I'm not proved wrong.

...good luck.

Had mine done a couple of weeks ago and got the 60k kit from Courtesy.

The garage did replace the tensioner.

Jack you have hit the nail on the head I think. The tensioner and the pump are so inaccessable in normal terms that changing them at a belt swop is often advised for the sake of time saving.

I mean if they were sitting out in the open and easy to see then they would only be changed if required. I have done many of these and never found a tentioner in need of change. The correct method of retraction/ holding actually allows for resetting the tensioner anyhow.Add to this a measurment check of the adjustment point after new belt fitted (ie 4 mm) really begs the question why replace a fully working part? On the subject of the water pump,as Nissan have reduced this part I do now reccomend changing it myself to customers as the time/cost is so much less now than going in again later.

The manual also suggests front cam seals be changed at the same time weather leaking or not!! jeez may as well lift the heads off and poke around in there too!

Sensible is the name of the game here,if no history get belt changed asap that`s the heart breaker if it goes.

Strangely have recently found that the lower mileage jap imports (mine included) belts are looking very rough when removed, more a time ageing proccess than mileage, this is when lower use can some time need more servicing.

Peace to all biggrin.gif

What?

Trev

Trev - this is the second post I've seen today with a link to somebody's web site as a commercial venture - this is a forum not a bill board wink.gif

CAN'T SEE WHAT ALL THE FUSS IS ABOUT PERSONALLY. I'D PREFER TO HAVE JEFF DO WORK ON MY CAR THAN ANY GARAGE THAT I KNOW OF.

WE ALWAYS BITCH ABOUT HOW SHIT NISSAN ARE - ATLEAST JEFF TAKES AN INTEREST.

FFS - ARE WE HERE TO HELP EACH OTHER OR WHAT? WE ALL RESPECT THE FACT THAT JEFF KNOWS A SHED LOAD ABOUT OUR BELOVED ZS BUT IT DOESN'T MEAN THAT HE SHOULD DO IT FOR FREE THOUGH.

I REMEMBER SEVERAL PEOPLE ASKING FOR PRICES ON CERTAIN JOBS ABOUT A MONTH BACK.

AS A CONSUMER, I'M AS HAPPY AS LARRY. THE MORE THE MERRIER I SAY.

OK then so lets let everyone come on here and advertise their services shall we??? I don't se SE, Hiteq, Z centre or anyone else advertising so why make excuses for others??? It seems quite obvious that I am the only one with this view (tonight). I was making a point not asking everyone to start flaming me!!! My opinion is my opinion and nobody is gonna change that! Make up your own minds what you think of me for doing this but I thought we were all allowed to show our views....

CheerZ,

Andy

BTW There are more than a handfull of people who know about our cars on this forum and to date I haven't seen a single one of them asking for money...... Whats the point in having a forum for advice if it just turns into a place to advertise your services FFS????

This is most unlike you Andy frown.gif

I hope all is ok with you buddy, cant understand why anyone would dis Jeff and the work he does on Zeds frown.gif

Like I said mate I hope all is well with you personally Andy cos these remarks aint from the Andy I know and love from MSN smile.gif

Peace..

Glen

Mr Duff.

I think Jeff is only trying to help other Zed users like myself by offering reasonable prices and a high quality service for forum members. Not sure why this puts a bee in ur bonnet though smile.gif

If other "forum members" wanna advertise stuff, then why not? As long as its Zed related and we all save a few bob and get sound service.

I aint seen anyone slag of Smithy for selling Zed bits? And why should they, as he offers good prices on Zed bits.

Any way, i'll take this opportunity to re-post Jeff's URL for anyone interested:

How come you're moderating this Forum anyway? It smacks of personal censorship to me, and should cease before everyone gets upset.Jeff hasn't done anybody any harm, unlike some of the forum users!

getting back to the origional question,no I didn't change my tensioner as its only a spring and bearing ,the bearing felt fine and the spring looked ok(even new springs break)I did change another bearing on the cambelt as that one felt ropey (£48).and no I didn't change the waterpump as there was no movement and and no obvious leaks(I pressure tested the cooling system).but if it give me any problems then I'll just fix it.I don't believe in changing things just for the sake of it, unless it was an internal part of the engine for example then it would be stupid to skimp on parts.

Thanks for hijacking my thread guyz frown.gif

I'm still none the wizer. Do I change the tensioner or not?

Tim

Jeeez....You do get easily upset!

I was refering to editing of posts, and not your personal point of view.

If you're going to edit, then please cut out the foul language..Thankyou.

p.s. Please re-read your history books before you use the name of Adolf Hitler as an analogy, on something as trivial as a bulletin board!

Peace

Japcar, the threads have been editted by the users themselves wink.gif

CheerZ,

Andy

PS Sorry Tim wink.gif

Change it Tim, my tensioner broke, the belt was 100% on removal, luckily it went on idle and I escaped with just a replacement instead of a total top end rebuild.

Better safe than sorry!

Cheers Roy

japcar i have to ask how old you are?

Just as a matter of interest.
