I dont know if anyone else has ever noticed this...

Switch the car into O/D off (so the light is on)

Accelerate from 0 going through the gears...1 is ok 2 to but sometimes revs a bit high even though youre not poking it

2-3 the car seems to hestitate and want to brake even though you havent put your foot off the gas, then it starts to pick up again but not much until you give it some more..

it happens also with O/D on (the light off) if you floor it just from 0 but its more noticable with the od off..

anyone got any ideas on this? feels rather weird and unnecessary

(I wonder if i have got everything that can go wrong with a zx on my car?!)

sounds like what mine does it feels the car has a 2 stage gearchange from 2nd to 3rd when accelerating lightly and feels like the car pulls back when changin from 2nd to 3rd with moderate or rapid acceleration.

Could be duff 02 sensors, does it run better when warmed up?

Are you just talking about the overdrive dropping in & out ?

Are you just talking about the overdrive dropping in & out ?

or the converter locking up,it feels like another gear which is normal

FYI

The 4 speed automatic transmission is a lockup type. When in drive mode, gears change 1-2-3 then 3 lockup, giving the effect of 4 gears. When overdrive (4th) is switched in, the change goes 1-2-3-4 then 4 lockup, giving the effect of 5 forward gears. There is a communications link between the automatic transmission control computer and the engine management computer, and this amongst other things, allows the engine computer to retard ignition, thus momentarily reducing engine power, during auto gear changes. Auto gear changes therefore are very smooth. The automatic transmission fitted to the turbo model is stronger than the one installed in the non turbo. Although the gear ratios are almost identical, there are many minor differences between the two transmissions.

The Japanese automatic transmission has many more features than the export models. A "power", "normal" and "hold" switch is fitted to modify transmission shift points. The effect of the "power" setting is to delay upshifting, but does not alter the maximum RPM that change occurs. In order to change at the red line or rev limiter speed, one must operate the shifter manually. The hold setting allows holding prevents downshift into second when the shifter is set to "D", and prevents downshift into first when the shifter is in "2". Another curious feature with the Japanese version is that lock up is also available in second gear.

sounds like a common problem then still its a right pain in the a*se, im getting the feeling its just 'an old auto box on its way out'....

Yeah, I've got this too. 1-2 is a lovely sweet change and gives you a great sense of power but 2-3 doesn't have the same smoothness. The rev counter seems to dip back a bit when you're booting it and the car seems to take time to get you into third.Switching o/d on and off is quite smooth too. it's just 2-3 at high speed which doesn't seem right.

I'm not sure what andyp's thread means about "Lockup", but it surely doesn't refer to a slow change in gear?

The Automatic Gearbox on these car's are fitted with Lockup torque Converters!!

Which allows the gearbox to transmit full engine power and rpm to the Rear wheels via the prop/differential.The lockup clutch eliminates converter slip above a pre-programmed Ecu minimum vehicle speed and gear.

You also gain added Fuel economy due to less Converter turbine/rotor slip.

You Can also Fit high stall Torque Converter's which allow build up more off the line rev's while in Drive and allow you to run more aggressive cam's and a higher Idle to compensate for a lopy idle.

Cheers zmaster, think I need a degree in physics and engineering for all this!

all valid points but i still get the feeling if u had driven this off the forecourt and it felt like that in a gearchange u would take it back to the shop and ask what what wrong..even if i boot from 0 with o/d on (no light) allthe way to a ton with it floored it isnt exactly smooth...know what i mean?

Sorry guys just read that car was hesitating, and thought 02's straight away!
