How do I adjust the alternator tension, I've found the bolt but it doesn't seem to do anything!

loosen bolt holding alternator to engine, only enough for a bit of movement.

 

loosen locking nut under alternator, behind adjustment bracket.

 

turn adjustment screw clockwise.

 

tighten everything up again.

There are three bolts you need to use. The first is the pivot bolt which rests on the block of the engine at the end of the adjuster slide. The second is the lock nut which is on the fron side of the adjuster slide and the third is the adjusting bolt on the end of the adjuster slide. The first and second should only be cracked a few turns, the thrird is the one that actually adjusts the belt, when the belt is adjusted tighten up one and two

doh, too slow

Note of caution:

 

Overtightening the alternator belt can cause water pump bearing failure.
