I think my zed is overfueliing quite bad, I havn't found any leaks in the fuel system and the system seems to be pressurised properly.

MPg has dropped to around 11 and there is an aura of petrol smell around the car,= when driving, I think i heard the exhaust pop yesterday at about 100mph also. I've recently had new o2s and cats put on.

car also idling at 1000rpm and hesitates at times when pulling away,

any ideas where to start looking?

car is stock boost with stock ecu,

Would the temperature sensor for the ecu effect this??

(the larger of the two in the water pipes at the front of the engine)

just an idea as this caused mine to flood so i replaced it..fine now

Take a look at the vacuum pipes on the fuel damper, in fact, blank them off and then test it. It is possible that it's sucking fuel in through it !

Alternatively, did someone mix up the O2 sensor and cam advance plugs down the back of the engine ? Get a ConZult on it - may help.

Had a similar problem with over fueling Mike. Turned out to be a very stretched cam belt, leading to the timing being 10 degrees out OMG. Had to advance the CAS to compensate, as it was firing out of time n sending unburnt fuel through the exhaust. This also led to a very irratic tick over because the AACV couldn't keep it balanced.

Just a thought mate. You may want to check your timing marks on the crank pully.

check that the O/S lamber sensor is not plugged into the emissions controler as the plugs are the same and none off the wire colouring follows through. I had exactly the same symptoms and JD spotted it and hey presto.

The ECU thinks theres not fuel in mixture because its nor actually reading the lamba signal. so it pumps more fuel. + its quite likely you unplugged a few of the wires there to get into the lambas.

Hope it is this problem because in 10 seconds its fixed.

hmm cheers guys, what connectors should i be looking at, i didn't actually change the o2's myself, maybe i should have heh...

Fanny! There's your fault.

Get the boost turned up to use all that lovely fuel! :duffer:

Second a lot of the advice already given - if you can't get a ConZult on it then there's always the built in O2 sensor check, make sure it's actually cycling - if not then double check those plugs. And pull the ECU codes, naturally.

Big ditto on AndyP's suggestion - if the diaphram ruptures in the dampener then it fills your plenum with fuel, nice huh

Failing all that, it could be a leaking injector O-ring, pouring fuel into a cylinder.

Fuel temp sensor fault can cause these symptoms too, worth checking that.

If you reach down to your O/S lamba sensor and follow the wire up until you come to the plug on the loom by the bulkhead. you should see another plug that is Identical only a couple of inches away. simply unplug and swap over.

I don't know it you then need to reset you ECU, but it may be worth while anyway. So just undo the battery terminals and leave thom off for about half an hour then reconect and hey presto.

If JD is reading this can't you point it out if I'm wrong.

Mark, the ones that were reversed on yours were VTC solenoid and Knock sensor. It was rich as it was running on the Knock maps and due to some 'creative plumbing' on the vacuum lines.

Ya see I always get it wrong

But it sounded good and could still be the cause of your wo's. I think? couldn't it? well maybe?

I'll get my coat.

o2's appear to be plugged into the correct harness, driver side goes to one down the side of the plenum and passenger goes to one on top of the plenum towards the rear, all are clipped in place correctly.

any one in southend with a conzult?

this is all great advice - ive got a similar problem. would it be possible for someone to highlight where all these pipes and connections are on the engine bay by numbers piccie as I want to check some of them myself.

Well the top left "9" is the vacuum pipe to the fuel damper.

##EDIT## wrong linky...still looking

I have posted these before mate.....would of been 2-3months ago now...

I have them at home on the laptop so if no one posts up I'll put them up tonight

there is a whiff of fuel is that usual? it appears in good condition, what problems would blanking it off cuase? would tying a clip around to compress the tube be good enough

A whiff of fuel is probably bad if it's being drawn down that pipe. Blanking it temporarily should cause no problems. Dunno how tight you'd have to squeeze the hose to be sure of shutting it off. All you really need to do is blank off the balance bar end, in theory nothing should come through the damper.

ok if fuel is being drawn down there what is the solution? replace the dampner?

Yep, it means the diaphram is split.

I reckon its down to the extra weight of your coat :D

hmm reset the ecu and its back to normal, i guess i will wait for the ecu to relearn and then run some diags

  • 1 month later...

ok after ECU reset the problem has been sovled, i also cleaned out the aaic and my idle is nice and healthy again, I think there was a batch of dodgy fuel down here as kerri experienced fueling problems in her KA also.
