Stereo doesn't fit dashboard

When i got my Z'd it had an aftermarket head unit, nice Panasonic with CD changer. But it looks like it was fitted by a monkey. On closer inspection i found that the usual facia you get with stereos these days was not fitted, i have got it but it won't fit in the slot. There's about a 10mm gap on each side and 5mm top and bottom. I can't even ram the facia in. Anyone else got this problem or am i missing some parts?

you are missing the radio mounting brackets, you do not need the cage that comes with the head unit.

I think i've got the mounting brackets, the one i have is one piece and has a single screw each side, sits well back from the front of the stereo, maybee i should try moving the stereo out from the dash a bit, then the facia might fit.

What do the mounting brackets you speak of look like? - any pics?

I had the same problem with mine in that I couldn't fit the beveled facia that came with the stereo. I think they are designed to fit in a flat dash.

The ancient head unit I removed had a thin black pastic card that fitted round the stereo and under the zed's dash trim. I reused this and it left a nice neat job. I'll try to dig out a picture.

I got the huge Pioneer twin face stereo in mine, took some time though. If your in the area and need help give me a shout.

appreciate all your tips, i've still got the original stereo but the new stereo was fitted before i got the car so i don't know if there was a plastic card with it. Would be interested in any pics you guys have as its my first Z'd and i'm hungry for info.

chrisdbx - thanks for the offer man but were a bit too far apart (Wrexham), not to worry though, i'm a big boy now and i'm sure i can work something out. If i come up with any good solutions i will let you all know as it sounds like a common problem. A trip to B&Q may be in order....

I will take some pics of what i have done mate

yea, i've got that bracket. I'm going to try and re-mount the stereo slightly more forward (out of the dash) by about 5mm, that should allow the stereo facia to clip in and cover the gap. Will keep you guys posted...

Here's my install. Think you can make out the card surrounding the stereo. I think it makes it quite neat. Sure you could make one from plasticard or something from a model/art shop.
