A.I.V problem/ideas

Just recently had ye olde gurgle, drained the water out, returned, so took the whole thing off and split the air filter and reed assembly to find the insides just utterly rotten and beyond repair. Thing is I would like to know the consequence of leaving the A.I.V off (what is it's purpose FFS).By the way it's the passenger side but If it's Ok to remove it I'll take the other one off on the driver's side.......

Jonny, you can remove/disable the AIV-system without any problems.

It's there to have slightly lower emmission-levels during idle, but once the system/filters are clogged with water it's of no use anyway.

 

to disable the system, just locate and remove the small hose that runs to the AIV-solenoid and block it.

And then remove all of the excess "equipment" from your wheel arches, fit a couple of threaded plugs in the exhaust and away you go. Even Nissan realsied the system was crap and dropped it on the 93 onwards models.

My Series II '92 doesn't have this stuff either, which makes messing around with the front pipes easier !

 

I suspect that if you disable the AIV valves that the engine may run slightly richer because the recirculated gasses don't get returned to the combustion process. This is only a guess because it may be compensated for by the ECU/O2 sensors etc, but Henri mentioned that JWT produce a chip that doesn't include the AIV code - there must be a reason for that. Any ideas ?

I emailed JWT about this yesterday and am waiting for a reply. I am trying to establish why my JWT chip seems to run the engine over-rich (IMHO)

Andy - the engine doesn't run richer because gasses aren't being recirculated - that's the EGR valves job, not AIV's.. When the AIV's are active (from what I have read) the engine runs about 7% richer, and the AIVs inject air (from the intake) into the exhausts just in front of the CATs to heat them up quicker..

 

Having seen dyno charts from US cars BTW, they also run very very rich with the JWT chip - lambda figures very close to your own in fact, so I guess it's a safety measure implemented by Jim Wolf..

BTW guyz, I have 1 vac pipe that I've blocked up, the pipe from the exhaust I've blocked up,

question is what do I do with the other hose that disappears upto the inner wing that was connected to the airbox, do I plug this or will it get condensation in it again??
