please make me happy

the story is this...

I have a very small leak from a hose at the back of the engine, very minor.

Now today, the car had a hammering, and while on the motorway crusing nicely at 70mph, the car lost some power, also lost a cylinder.

temp gauge was fine, oil was fine. pulled over, car cut out, and steam pissed from the back of the engine.

Started the car again after making sure it wasnt a belt etc, and she was hesitent in starting, when she did, she was down a cylinder and knocking from top quite bad.

got brought home by RAC started car to drive off the lorry, and it sounded ok, knocking had gone, and back on 6 cylinder, though still has a little miss i think.

could this be that in lucky, and just cooked the oil resulting in it being too thin to stop tappet noise?

also, why drop a pot, then be come back ?

please say its ok

  • 1 month later...

Sounds kinda like what happened to me recently...

Just bought a '90 TT and was driving home and pulled into a garage to get some petrol. Which was quite lucky really as when I stopped I noticed alot of steam coming from the engine. temp read ok though.

The engine was also idleing very unevenly up and down between 500rpm and 1500rpm. Parked up and had a look under the bonnet. I was greeted by a plume of steam coming from the back of the engine bay. when I checked the water it was basically empty!

I left it to cool and then topped her up. The car ran fine again and idled smoothly. I too had the tapping which I believe is from overheating the oil etc. And I think the gauge read ok cos the little water I had in there was getting pumped round while i was moving.. but when I stopped it got hot very quick!

Anyway the leak seems to be at the back of the engine bay by the battery on the passenger side. I cant quite pin point it though. Im just crossing my fingers and hoping its not expensive! There also seems to be deposits from the additive in the cooling water left on the engine so it looks like its under a bit of pressure because its everywhere. Thing is Im not losing water all the time it seems to be intermittent! I hope you can help me out too!

erm... what the hell happened to yours?

heh the knocking noise is gone by the way, it runs real smooth now - its only got 70k miles on the clock so it oughta. Im gonna change the timing belt asap aswell so I guess when I get that done is the best time to get the leak checked out. Im really annoyed with the leak tho. trouble is it doesnt do it all the time. It dropped a load of water on my mates drive earlier today - less than a small cup full but then nothing at all after that. It just doesnt leak all the time. It does hiss a bit though...

Bloody hell!-saw this an' shat me kecks!!

then realised it's an old post! DOH!

:nono: :nono: -that's the cowards way out dude! :)

i'm no coward, but chuff am i skint

:( dont forget me!

I still have a problem!! ha ha ha

I sure hope I dont need a new engine :hurl: that would be more than my money's worth for the car. I just paid £4k for it!

Anyway it runs fine at the moment. I went out in it today for a ride with my mate. And all seemed fine apart from every now and again a sort of water-escaping-under-pressure noise from the passenger side of the car. I am wondering if it has anything to do with the thermostat opening and closing? I am just hoping its a split/ loose pipe rather than a cracked head or something horrible like that...

Hi t-Pot

Could be the PTU

I was reading that it gets hot on the engine, fails then when it cools down it works again. Just what Ive read no direct experience !!!

Dont know if anyone else has suggested this but thats my idea...

Is your PTU still mounted on the end of the cam cover ??

Is it still the one with the ribbed (oerr-missus) cover, if so thats the older more fragile one. Failure of this device can effect one or more cylinders as it leaves coil pack without energy. it says 'ere

heh john T-pot has long since fixed his problem (by dropping i a new lump) sorry its an old thread! It was just me asking if he could help me out because my problem seemed very similar. However I dont think mine is so severe. Well lets hope not!
