Hi Guys,

Can anyone tell me where I can get replacement rose jointed tension rods as I managed to snap the drivers side one the other day.

Also has anyone else suffered a similar failure with there's. Basically I came round a blind corner doing about 50 to find a line of standing traffic with the last car reversing backwards. Anyway slammed the anchors on reasonably hard to pull up, all going fine then an almighty bang and the car pulled hard to the right. Managed to stop ok without hitting anyone and pulled up to investigate what the noise was to find the arm snapped in 2 and a small amount of bodywork damage where the wheel had come back and hit the arch liner. I haven't curbed the car or to my knowledge caught anything with the rod; I have got ohlin coilovers set pretty low but the car just had a service (including swapping to this suspension set) and an MOT with no prob's. The rod's were on the car when I bought it about a year ago. Am at a loss to explain how this has failed, just hope it's a material weakness isolated to this rod rather than an inherent design fault :( I certainly wouldn't want this happening at speed, the break looks totally clean so doesn't look like it's been going for a while.

Any help / advice would be much appreciated,

Cheers K.

Are they ajustable Rose jointe ones you got on that have snapped?

Yep they are, snapped (or more acurately pulled apart) flush with the rear of the adjuster. Haven't got it off yet but you can clearly see it through the wheel and looks as though the threaded portion of the rod has literally been torn apart. Hopefully the pic link is below (not sure as not done that before)

Cheers for that Vijay, will give him a call.

 holy sh*t

Mac put a thread up a while back about polybushes on OE tension rods, causing a failure, bit it was said that this problem could not affect rose jointed tension rods.

http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=22382&highlight=tension

(These two issues may be totally unrelated!)

Yep had seen that thread before so checked it out as soon as I got home, but that only deals with oem rods with polybushing, not rose jointed rods.

This does seem like a totally different issue as that warning from Mac dealt with the inflexibility of the polybushes transfering the torsional stresses down the rod and resulting in stress fractures either at the head of the rod or at the fixing point on the lower arm. This seems to have just literally pulled apart under the force of hard braking in the middle of a corner (right hander).

If it seems that this is an isolated case then fair enough, I will take it that there was a weakness in the material used, or inferior material grade and just replace with the same items from a known source. If on the other hand this has been experienced before then I will look to have a set machined that are a lot heavier duty than these.

They look like they've been made with pish poor white metal instead of High tensile steel. You want the Nismo approved one's sold by courtesy Nissan in Texas with the anodized green ajustment bar, but make sure they arn't put on by a muppet.

Celt1, where did you get those from??

Vijay

Hi Vijay,

The rods were on the car when I bought it, and as the guy I bought it from hadn't had it long, and was the first owner after import, I assume they were fitted in Japan.

Mark, cheers for that mate will have a look - and yeh that was my thought too, that they were more show than go, and it would either prove to be an isolated material weakness or monkey metal :smw:

Just noticed your only about 10 miles from me.

With a name like Celt1 I always think Jockser land for some strange reason, even though my wife is Irish and constantly telling me that my youngest 2 kids are Celts because they're Welsh :headvswal :headvswal

Wow yeh, just noticed your in Overton on Dee - I'm actually in St.Martins so only about 5 miles away. Bein so close would be good to get together sometime.

Holy Shat dude

As said above...looks a poor quality metal used

and the wise words of NISMO ones should be heeded :smash:

Glad you wernt hurt and your still with us in this lucky escape...

I imagine if you fully loaded it up into a corner at 80+ it could of been so much worse

The MAIN differences between different makes of tension rods is the bearings, they should be a sealed unit and not just shielded like some are.

Ebay ones are imo well dodgy, nismo yes always make good products however Courtesy do not list them as Nismo ( that i can see) or state they are sealed bearings which is the main selling point of tension rods.

FYI SPL tension rods like all their suspension products are regarded in the US as pretty much the best on the market, oh and Smithy normally supplies them :p

cheers

Yep reckon I got off really light with this one, thank god that it happened when it did. Also my bodyshop reckons the damage to the wing will only cost bout £120 to repair so more luck there.

Just like to say thanks to everyone thats responded too, with both advice and kind words, really is a great community here!!!

Smithy will give you a call bout some replacements, cheers dude.

That is exactly what happened to me on Saturday evening. All I can say is thank god that Mr silver Vectra man was a good driver and awake.

Yep Celt I rumbbled through St Martins last night on my way to the China Gardens in Oswestry and they were goddam closed..

No problem though mate we'll meet up some time. + There's Steve Machon in Llangollan and a lad just round the back of me with a silver Jspec Auto. Your not the Chap with Pearl white manual are you cos I thought he lived in Overton + there is a red N/A that lives in the Apartments in the old Lyndesfarn College. So we could have a Marcher meet.

Did yer have the fitters do the wheel alignment Mark or someone else after you got yer car back ?

cheers

No he who I shall not name had it done. Otherwise I'd be very pissed with who ever I had do it. I've had it all reset with a Porsche specialist and he pointed out that the lock bolts on the top camber arms have been over tightend and shagged the threads + the same on the rear camber ajustment nuts all 4 on the whiteline kit have been over tighten 2 will need replacing and the Alan bolts on front will need re tapping or helicoiling. The tie rod was OK because there was so little thread in it just knackered the first thread. + They are the SPL ones I got from the Indian (carn't remember his name)

Not impressed is a under statement + like Celt1 i've suffered gamage to a side skirt and paint work. "Won't be his fault though, be someone else ripping him off etc. It's never his fault he only owns the garage".

Few months back Courtesy had tie bar and front camber arms in Nismo section with green anodized bits instead of Green stove enamel.

Yeh a Marcher meet sounds good to me.

Mines a Silver J Spec manual. Not come across a white one round the area. There are 2 Grey's around Oswestry and a Black one up towards Queens Head too but I don't think any of them are club members though. Deffo not seen your's yet as I think I would have noticed that, as it looks pretty damn stunning mate.

If your in St. Martins anytime drop by. I live at the Post Office, although only there in the evenings and weekends, or drop me a pm.

Just read through your post too, glad you are ok and the cars not too badly damaged (pretty similar damage to mine by the way, spooky). Thank god there are some decent drivers still on the road and hope you get some joy from the garage thats abused your motor, just don't hold your breath, you'll probably suffocate. Really decent garage's seem to be few and far between these days.
