Yeah, following on from my previous thread and all the nice suggestions, I've got myself a new battery and the only thing it solved was that my wipers dont turn itself on anymore when I turn on the ignition! Aint got a clue why it wont start but it doesnt make any nice noises so I've recorded the sound and recorded the dash lights!

So please do tell me what's up! Otherwise I'm gonna need a mobile mech to turn up and help fix my problem.

I figured it might be a starter problem myself as when it was running before all I heard was this clunking noise and decided that I prob should turn the car off before it does some serious damage... that was when I ended up having to get 2 of my mates to help me push the bloody thing back into the parking area!

I'll try convert the video into something a little more video friendly.

get underneath it and see if its trying to throw the starter cog into line...

if it is and its not engaging it could be the starter motor

that was the problem with mine ;)

is it a manual? could try a push start which would rule out the starter.

Not a manual, I've converted the video though couldnt convert the sound cause I havent a bloody clue what the format is. All I know is that I was moving it about in the car park then I put my foot a little down on the gas to get it moving a little faster and clunking sounds came out of it...! Probably is a starter problem... from my guess.

If anyone can tell me where exactually the starter is I'll get myself under the car during the week and find out what it is and if I need a new starter then I guess I better go find one!

Its bolted to the gearbox by two bolts...(actually 1 bolt one nut)

Its behind the drivers side manifold

Make sure you disconnect the battery before going near it bud....

It will arc weld itself to the exhaust if your not carefull

Will take a look around under there! I think I better do a search on how easy it is to get a starter motor replaced! God damn it, fix one thing, break another! >

Right managed to get the Z started. After two hours under the car looking for the bloody starter motor. I think I found it... couldnt find a way of getting the thing off and it started to tick me off so I smacked it one with the wrench I was holding.

And the Z started... ¬¬!

Anyhow, it now sounds like a bloody tractor! Thanks for the help you guys! I think I'm gonna go book her into one of the specialist now as I've probably done enough damage changing oil and ending up with a smoking Z! Though on the other hand I did find out where the leaking oil is dripping out of. Gear box... >

Hello mate,

What sounds like a tractor, your engine or the starter motor?

The starter motor sounds more like a tractor. Though the more I rev the faster the tractor sound is, so not tooo sure! But definetly sounds like it's coming from under the driver side.

Once the engine is running you wont hear anything from the starter so if you rev it and still hear the tractor noise its something else you can hear, unless the starter has jammed on but it would soon burn out and stop.

Sounds like the starter is stuck in. You cant drive it with it stuck in, you will end up with even more problems. :(

sounds very much like the starter motor is'nt disengaging from the ring gear when you start it and its the teeth on the ring gear grateing on the starter motor pinion, try to get a good secondhand or recon starter motor. And change it yourself, save your self a fortune, and gain some experiance.

The car is registered SORN while I get it up a point where I'm happy for it to be on the road, so it aint going anywhere yet!

Planning to do that but I didnt exactually have any luck in finding the starter motor when I was down there though I was pretty sure what I smacked with my wrench cause I got a bit peed off for being under the car for 2 hours was the starter motor. If anyone has a nice picture of where exactually it is then that'll be great as my guess was it's near the oil filter near the driver side exhaust pipe. I think...

Though didnt have my XDA then so couldnt get a sound recording but I'll try and get a recording later today as long as it's not rainning that is.

Couple of pics of the starter here

Not great pics, but the first ones I found after a search on TTnet..

Cheers, that was definetly the thing I wacked with my wrench...! Once I stopped unbolting the wrong thing that is. Will see if I can get the stupid thing and and source myself a working starter motor.

Whacking starters is a good way of getting them working again..

I kid you not.

Depending on what the problem with it is, of course :)

Mate, just a chance but this might be useful for your oil leak? My old car had an oil leak from the rocker covers (above the cams). The oil collected in the V of the engine and then drains down through the bell housing of the gear box. It then comes out of the bottom of the gear box close to the starter motor.

Just out of interest does the starter motor work if you short the wires across it? sorry if I've missed the boat, I've not read the whole thread! Dave

I'm not 100% sure where the oil leak is coming from but I know it's around where the autobox oil tray is and it does seem to be coming off the housing of the gear box first. Not a major leak or anything as it seems to only leave a tiny pool of oil after standing around for at least a week odd.

As for the wires on the starter motor I didnt actually find it to take it out of the car but as people has pointed me to pictures of it, I did whack it one and the car now starts... with tractor like noises now.
