Locked my car with the key this evening, and... Twang!

Something has given way in the door. Now the lock will happily turn left and right with no resistance, i.e. no locking or unlocking!

Just as well I was stripping the doors ayway this weekend to fit new speakers and window rubbers :)

Does it involve a brick? :mac1: :headvswal

Sounds like the plastic arm has broken on the back of the lock. Mine went a year ago you cant buy the plastic bit only the whole lock. unless anyone knows otherwise.

Hmm... are the door locks the same? I.e. can I just swap them over?

That way I can at least have a working driver's door lock :)

Same problem on mine, haven't got round to fixing it yet (lean accross from pass side!!) but... JeffTT posted a 'how to...' modify the passenger side part to fit the drivers side - will see if I can find the link...

Well that's just great! Got the doors in bits, screws, nuts, door trim everywhere and it starts to pi$$ down, FFS! :headvswal

It's a bit of a bu99er to do!

It's the plastic bit in question, and I managed to fish out the connecting rod to disconnect the broken bit. And using torches and socket extensions I managed to un-mount the handle, but right now I can't quite figure out how to get the handle assembly out far enough to fiddle with the back of the barrel.

Got some component speakers to mount inside the car... maybe I can do that till the sun comes out again :)

Got it sorted.

It's a real pain to get the door handle off. With gentle maneouvring and only a few scrapes it came out.

I didn't swap the passenger bit over tho- I found that the strip of metal you usually get with a new car stereo is perfect for working your own replacement. It's actually a hole and a slot alternately, but if you fold it over so that the end of each slot lines up with a hole then from one hole to the end of the following slot is just about the right distance (see attached pic!).

Then it was a case of drilling out the holes a little (6.5mm I think) and using a small hacksaw to make the slots to fit the key barrel.

I think it's either ever-so-slightly shorter than the plastic bit, or (more likely) the plastic bit had a slight angle in it. So it works just fine, but the action is a bit different- you have to turn the key more to lock it than you do to unlock it.

:)
