Single exhausts

For thorese that know

How can a single exhaust system be of any benefit of a dual system. Surly restricting the flow of exhaust gases would be detremental to power.

Not wanting to raise any conflict, as mine has the single exhaust.

Also is there a kit for the back that compliments the lack of exhaust better than the original.

What you got then Mark? Super Drager???

They seem to perform aswell as any other aftermarket zorst but they don't look right on a car that is supposed to have symmetry! LOL biggrin.gif

Kit for the arse end? Soup rear bumper? biggrin.gif

The fact that it wont restrict gas flow is the point, Im sure *they* wouldnt design a single pipe that slowed exhaust gases down, as after one person bought it and had the car dynoed and saw it was well down on power, no one else would buy it. Twin pipes are usually only for aesthetic benefit, and offer no performance enhancements over a well designed single pipe. It is the boxes that slow the gases down more than the diameter of a pipe (within reason of course), and that is where the performance benefits are made up, just cos there are twin pipes doesnt mean the exhaust gases will escape twice as quick.

Mark does have a Super Dragger Timmy - very nice it sounds as well smile.gif The fact is (as said above) twin pipes don't necessarily mean better flow - they look better because the car is balanced symetrically but no performance problems. In fact I think the Super Dragger is rated quite highly in the 'Power to be gained' stakes wink.gif

Thanks for the comments guys.

Just needed to prepare myself while in the pub tonight, as the car is generating quite a bit of local interest - and it would look good if I knew what I was talking about - that'll be a first then!!

Cheers

biggrin.gif LMFAO biggrin.gif

When will anyone spell it correctly? SUPER DRAGER! wink.gif

Oh I'm full of tech tonight...you're all wrong. Reason the Z has twin zorsts is because Nelson designed the Z32 engine to effectively act as two engines. True, each bank of cylinders was deemed to act as two seperate engines...hence coil packs for each individual pot and two zorsts!

See A to ZX and you'll understand what I'm on about! wink.gif So they aren't just for looks, there is method in the madnezz...we know a song by them don't we...

biggrin.gif

A single exhaust on a Z32 looks total PANTS(its a technical term) biggrin.gif

They were designed with a quad tailpipe design in mind....anything less than a least two large pipes looks PANTS! 4 would be even better biggrin.gif

So from the manifold, to the downpipe, does it not join to one and split back out again? or is it two fully sperate pipes through the length of the car?

So two seperate engines?? presumably this means the two sides are independant of each other then, i.e. not connected, not even by a cambelt? that is good.

yoink

I saw under my car yesterday and the exhaust does indeed stay as two pipes all the way down.

Although I've got quad pipes, I have to admit that joining the two pipes into one back box does make a nicer sound. I'm sure the hp loss (if any) is really pretty negligable.

Nothing conclusive.... I have a Tanabe single exhaust.... it may only be one but it is 3.75 inches wide.

I would say yes, it's better than stock (mine puts down pretty satisfying dyno figures) but is probably not as good as a properly well sorted dual system.

On the other hand 95% of V6 engines join up to one exhaust (performance or otherwise) so it can't be *that* bad....

Ben

Timmy - stick to using this place as a messaging board and don't try and be clever tongue.gif wink.gif

The engine has several connections between the two banks...

1) Single intake branching to two

2) Balance bar on top of the plenum (not as some people believe a strengthening bar biggrin.gif)

3) Even the twin pipes are connected in the centre by an H section...

A single exhaust can actually help with the flow btw wink.gif

biggrin.gif ROFLMFAO biggrin.gif

So you're saying that the H pipe thing is actually one piece then? Sorry and correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that they were seperate and independant from each other??? Confused now! wink.gif

Which is why when some peeps post about smoking from the zorst...the response is "which side?"

What you doing posting on my message board anyway? Fuck off over to the boring Tech forum where you belong!!! ROFLMFAO biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

That last bit was a joke before the handbags come out! biggrin.gif

My handbag is bigger than yours anyway! ROFL biggrin.gif

Hehehehe. The H pipe basically ensures the two banks are working together - I'm gonna ask the left bank (HSBC) of my engine for a loan so I can buy more toyZ biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Should you have invested in a Mongoose cat back then the H pipe is gone .... Presume a few other are like this too. It's a minor pain in the ass because should you also have de-cat pipes then there is no physical link whatsoever between the two halves of the exhaust and they tend to move about a bit much. I had to fabricate (lash-up) a stay between the two sides where the rear section would have joined the cats.
