A couple of questions about the 300ZX!!

Hey guys!

Well Im new to this board and I have a couple of questions for ya.

I currently own a 1990 MR2 Turbo, we just brought a 1994 supercharged Toyota Trueno for my missus. Only problem is while we both love the Trueno we have problems! Turns out there are some faults that I didn't know about and to cut a long story short I will probably be getting my $ back!

The Trueno was a manual and while I know it's sad the missus was going to learn to drive it (She only drives autos!) she cant! She wants an auto. Anyways she ALWAYS love the 300ZX but because we wanted the twin turbo model (Her old man wouldn't let her!) we never bothered. Now we are thinking a Non turbo, Automatic 300ZX. It will be a daily driver and I know the make great long distance tourers. So what if any (If I remember right there are) the differences between the 89 models and the 90+ ones. I remember some GOOD changes were made between the models.

They are definitly withen our price range as I have seen half a dozen just tonight for a auto, non-turbo 89-91 between $8400.00 and $10,500.00 (NZD).

I have read about the things to do to the turbo are they the same and what sould I look out for as I don't fancy ending up in the same situation that Im in now!

Any info would be great!!

Oh and if your interested in other cars as well as 300ZX's my website has some AWESOME clips for you to download

I would stay away from the 89 models. All the models have problems but like most cars the first production ones are usually the worst.

I saw a site with all the problems with each year on in and what was wrong with them. I will try to find it for you. But I am sure some one on here will know what I am talking about and tell you first.

The non-turbo auto is supposed to be pretty slow (0-60 7.5 seconds) compared to the other models which are all a lot quicker.

I have an 89 twin-turbo auto and its fine. There were some cylinder head problems with the first 89 model cars but apparently this only affected a very small number of cars and if they're still going after 12 years then they should be fine. Not sure of any other differences between 89 and 90. If buying an early Jap-spec auto make sure you upgrade the oil cooler (not sure if this is necessary for a non-turbo but is essential on a turbo - mine destroyed the gearbox twice before an extra oil cooler was added)

Go for the twin turbo, you know you want to, you'll only be longing for more power if you don't smile.gif

Hi KiwiMR2

There are some significant differences in spec on the non turbo compared to the twin turbo not least things like no four wheel steer no cruise control and have seen one without ABS!! and no air con!! If however the non turbo is for you then look as many as poss because often when new special orders where made and I have seen some non turbo`s with all the toys.T say the non turbo is slow is a misnomer, yes in comparision to a twin turbo, but in the bigger picture its still a 3 litre V6 so its gonna fell nice, tuning though will be different slightly to the TT as most extra power is derived from running more turbo boost, however better breathing will help any engine so filter, exhaust and maybe a chip with better ignition curve could be an advantage, my thoughts anyhow.
