Is 35 too old to contemplate taking up martial arts training?

Don't keep fit TBH drink, smoke and sexual activity is about the only "Keep fit!!!" that I take part in. ;)

What do you lot reckon?

weve got members in our club that started training in their 50's!!!

go for it timmy mate :D

go for it, i know plenty of old buggers practising, they are usually in all sorts of bandages and supports though and take the odd month off when their back goes out lol,

depends what you want to do though, taichi would be very different from something like brazilian "nuts in your face" ju-jitsu

What's the best stylee to go for then? Kung Fu, Karate or Tai 'Lady Boy' Kwondoo? :D

Or should I just do what I did as a kid...cut up a broom handle nail a short length of bath plug chain imbetween to create DIY SOS Nun Chuckers and then flail them around making Brucee Lee cat noises until I knock mesen out? LOL :D

depends what you want to achieve and what you want to get out of it, and also what clubs are nearby :)

i guess the best straight cut options are

Judo, karate or jujitsu,

i do aikido, which is meant to be a defensive art, I do it though because i was always fascinated with the locks and throws involved,

I did Kung Fu all the way through my teens and was going to start again but dont have the time. Go for it.

havnt had the time recently, but have done kyokushinkai karate since i was 13, good all round martial art - loadsa fitness work, good skill levels and hard fighting.

its one of the more 'solid' styles of karate - less kata, more sparring.

I started doing karate about 2 years ago at the age of 34 and I love it. If it wasn't for the fact that we go out for a few social drinks afterwards, I'd be in great shape by now! :duffer: ;)

tai chi is pretty good i recon, i did kung fu for 10 years and really enjoyed it

I've been doing various Martial arts for about 15yrs. Done pretty much everything at one point or another. Was heavily into Jeet Kune Do (Bruce Lees art) for many years. Now I mostly do Brazilian Jui Jitsu/No hold bars type stuff. I don't do it competitively mainly because I don't have the time to focus on it at the moment, but there's always a few Marines about at work who are willing to have a knock around. I represented the British Forces in Taikwondo at got a Bronze/silver (can't remember, bronze I think)in the British championships. I don't actually like taikwondo at all but it was either that or Karate in the forces and I didn't like the way the sparring is stop-start in karate after every point. Taikwondo is all kicks and the people who do it can rarely use their hands properly so I definately wouldn't recommend it. It also requires a high degree of stretching flexibility due to the high kicks (bunch of bloody balerina's).

If you want to learn to fight as well as keep fit (why would you choose to do martial arts otherwise?) its worth keeping the following in mind: Someone who knows how to work on the ground (ie brazilian jui jitsu or judo) can ALWAYS nullify the skills of someone who only knows how to kick or punch. Punching and kicking require a high level of practice to keep sharp whereas groundwork while also requiring skill does not need so much practice to keep the techniques working as they should. Unless you're punched by mike tyson the chances are you can absorb a few. You can't absorb a good strangle or choke (you'll be unconsious in a few seconds) and you can't absorb a good lock (you'll snap in a few seconds and it hurts like hell!). Some people might disagree with some of this (especially the punching and kicking specialists) but I've done it and have had to use it and know the realities of it.

The other great thing about ground fighting is you can go at it full tilt and not hurt each other. Most traditional martial arts either punch the air (waste of time), go semi contact (better but still a false sense of confidence), and/or punch pads (pads don't punch back....).

So to answer the question, go for brazilian jui jitsu if you can find a good club or go for judo (which is a sport version of jui jitsu anyway, usually with less locks and other nasty stuff). Your fitness wont be an issue, you'll just be very knackered and maybe a bit bruised for the first few months.

Bloody hell, I wrote a book there didn't I?!

Yep you did. I just learned a whole new style reading it thanks Dave. :hyper:

The art of fighting without fighting....like a finger pointing at the moon. Dont look at the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory.

Just had trout cooked over a fire in the garden with salad also from the garden. Aint life good?!

I'm staying in Badminton, Gloucestershire. yet to find the best place for drowning myself. River Severn I suppose. No surf and no swimming, gonna have to get my adrenalin hits by driving Zed very fast I guess.

i wanna learn the 1 inch punch...bruce lee stylee...seen clips of it..madness!!! either that or is there any styles that involve drinking vodka ??

i wanna learn the 1 inch punch....

Your breath would have the same effect!! PMSL!!

Mr Turbot, yer never too old for anything fella! :)

I'd recommend Muay Thai Boran for punching, kicking and elbows (good luck finding a Boran teacher- nearly everyone is just plain Thai kickboxing), and like Monghanroyal said Brazillian/Gracie jiu-jitsu for grappling. I'm doing Ninjitsu atm. its bloody hard but I love being a ninja, you get the black outfit and everything.
