Sure someone will corrent me if I'm wrong, but I think basically it's a heating element and a temperature sensor.

The more airflow over the sensor, the cooler it will be.

Where is the temperature sensor located in the MAF or else where on the car?

There is actually a wire like element standing on a stud at the center of the MAF. I believe this what measure how much are air flow into the TBs

I have also heard that its bad for the MAF to have a wet filter - how true that is, I don't know

What happens is the wire in the maf is heated by a current flowing through it, as air passes through the maf and over the wire it cools it, changing the resistance of the wire, therefore changing the current flow. The greater the cooling the greater the swing in current flow, this change in current is how the ECU interprets how much air is flowing.

basically its a hot wire annemometer.

Thats a great help cheers
