hand brake broke

when I fitted my ebc disc pads to the rear. I had to obviously back of the hand brake with the little cog, so I started doing it and then it just got really tight and the cog went a cm up clicked and come down again..

 

so now Ive lost my handbrake on the one side...

 

doubt I could have snapped the handbrake so what have I done wrong...
