When cold the car sometimes starts off idling at 2k which I'd say ain't normal, so when you change gear at low revs the revs jump up when you press the clutch.....goes away after a few mins.

Any ideas guys?

I've got something similar - the jump in revs seems to happen when I'm trundling around in gear with the revs *below* this high idle - once I take it out of gear, it's like it's jumping up to compensate, then slowly dies down.

The car also seems to be over-fueling - I've been getting the cat overheat light more and more over the past year. It doesn't run rough though, just has the warning light until I back off long enough for it to go away.

I'm off to C&S Woods next week for a service, and Phil said he'd see if he could work out what's happening. The problem's been ongoing for a year or so, since I had the PTU fail on one cylinder, and both O2 sensors go (dunno if that's relevant), but it's been too intermittent to catch. I suspected the AFM in my ignorance, but a ConZult check said it was ok :/ This cat overheat's so regular now, hopefully we can get it this time.

SUMMARY: I have a similar problem, along with overfuelling; I'll letcha know if C&S Woods manage to sort it :)

Thanks mate, don't think it's anything serious just one of those little annoyances!

Daz.

Well yeah, I know what you mean - probably just something dirty somewhere. Mine's taken a turn for the worst this last couple of days - cat light goes on as soon as it warms up now, and I *swear* the oil pressure's lower than before :S Glad it's booked in on Tuesday ;)

Daz, just a follow-up on this (although I dunno how helpful it will be). The car had a full service yesterday, and it seems to have sorted the high cold idling. Not sure what it could have been - the chap changed oil & filter, air filters (was last done about a year ago, I think), fuel filter (last done about 3 years ago, maybe) & plugs. He said the plugs looked fine, so it was maybe just a combination of dirty air filters and an old fuel filter (I'm not sure how often the fuel filter should be changed? :S).

The only other thing he mentioned doing was that he said the timing (?) was 4 degrees out, so he fixed that but said it was unlikely to make too much difference.

The cat overheating problem is still there, but he reckons the engine is running fine, and it's more likely that my cats are damaged from when my last PTU failed on one cylinder.

SUMMARY: problem fixed by full service inc all filters & plugs. Joy :)

Just for info I have and have had similar problems, though the cat overheat hasn't happened for a while now. When I had a big idle (2k), that turned out to be a vacuum leak from my clutch booster/servo.

My gut feeling with my present problem is that it's a smaller air leak somewhere- I've bypassed the air reg which has made a noticable difference (think there's an intermittent short-circuit), and next I'll also be bypassing the idle valve to see what happens!

Air filters looked ok, O2 sensors not bad but left looked a bit lazy, cleaned TBs, reset ECU, replaced PTU, replaced injector connectors, cleaned ALL other connectors. Replaced various brittle vacuum hoses. Still got to check the fuel filter- had forgotten about that! And will be doing a compression test just for completeness.

Hmm, good luck with that ;)

I *assumed* mine was over-fuelling, because that's certainly what it seemed to be when the problem started. I changed the O2 sensors because one was lazy and one was dead... still got cat overheat :/

The mechanic showed me my old plugs, and said they were fine, and not showing any signs of running rich, so it looks like the replacement O2s sorted the problem, but the knackered cats are still showing the symptoms. heh :)

Course, the 2k cold idle is gone now, so that must've just been down to dirty filters.
