Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At least.... He didnt absolutely crucify me.

Story:

Sat behind him in some traffic at the lights before it goes from 1 lane into 2. We both know we are both going to boot it but hes a slick one and does the old slowly coast up in 1st gear, get the turbos spinning ready for a boot. Im at a disadvantage not knowing exactly when to boot so I see his back end drop and he shoots forward very impressively. I boot it and surge too but with my crap clutch I manage to miss 2nd. By the time I'm in 2nd gear and I'm going for it again hes not making any ground away from me. We both hit traffic after about 10 seconds after I've kept up with him at the same distance all the way.

Analysis:

The late redtops have the heavier pot type flywheel meaning once you have it spinning up and you keep the revs up, bouncing off the limiter as you change they have a magnificent amount of pull around 4k onwards which the early redtops dont have.

I reckon I've lost about 100Kgs from my lightening of my car, maybe more. I reckon I'm now closer to 7s 0-60. Checking the Nissans specs they have 275BHP but 0-60 of 6.6s so even though he had a shed load more power the heavier car took most of it away.

Conclusion:

Redtop SRi's dont get the respect they deserve. You think its only 150BHP and only a 2l 16v NA but they are in real terms able to beat things like RST's, GT turbos, Pug 1.9 GTi's and almost keep up with Cav turbos, Rover Ti's, Sierra Cossies etc.

I thought they were quicker than that (in the 5's). Maybe it was an auto?

i once raced 3 escort xr3 turbos, one phase 1 and 2 phase 2's at the same time on a dual carraigeway. blew them into the dust in my astra 16v. I loved that engine!

Those figures don't look right to me Darren (maybe they're for the auto?). These (click on the link below) look more realistic to me .... and are similar to others I've seen in autocar etc.

The SRI's are often underrated and with the longer fifth f20 they can hit a real 138mph, which is pretty impressive.

I new that the later XE's had 'gearbox off' pot type clutches but never really considered the implications to performance (learn something new). I regularly keep with my friend who has a merc cosworth 205bhp, he is always amazed on how quick the sriXE is. He thought he should be able to kill it but in truth the performance is identical.

When driven properly they can be a real handful to some of the 'so-called' performance cars. This is why people that have never had one will always question threads in 'i beat this'.

I recently got to drive a v6 manual and found the XE felt a quicker car. The flywheel affect on the v6 is something i couldn't live with.

Well done on showing the riceburner that he wasn't the only quick thing on that road.

The first comment there applies to the V6 imo, lots of people slate the F25 saying its slow etc etc, but drive it properly and its great. Ok so itll never be a traffic light grand prix, but get it into its "zone" and its great, lovely long 3rd gear, how many cars can do 110mph in 3rd

Not very many AFAIK ...... although my old Mk2 Cav CDi could get close (105mph on the speedo in 3rd)

My SRi only does around 85mph in 3rd.

The Nissan 300zx TT is 5.5 secs, 280-300bhp (depending on version) and top speed of around 175mph. The specs printed above are WAY out. The Manual and Auto TT also boast near identical performance.

If it had been a TT, he could'nt of spooled the turbo's at the lights. They will only spool into positive boost under load at around 2500rpm (which would be around 20mph), and it would of resulted in the 300 horses hitting the back wheels and it snaking down the road or spinning out completely.

Its also much faster on the move, than it is from the lights, so either he was coasting when you kept up or it was probably a very good chance it was the Non-turbo. (220bhp, 0-60 low 7 secs).

Hope you're not 'dissing' NA's Si?

;)

Hello no, it was car I looked at when I was younger. But for me, half the reason I am gettting one is all about the power. My current (non-cavalier) car that I've just sold was only just below 200bhp.....so HAVE to have a TT. :)

lol One is a company car that I'm not using at the moment, the Cavalier is my bargain banger and the Convertible I've just sold to make way for the Zed which I've got a deposit on. :)

bah need to login to see that

U lazy fookers!!

my last car was a cav sri 8v that was bloody quick for a vauxhall would have kept it but the rot was starting to get to it plus i fell in love with the shape of the z. when i saw it i said to every one im gonna get one!! couldn't go back on my word could i ;)

yeehaw mine was a Cav GSi! still miss her - I think she's in Greece now (at least the engine is)

must have been a poorly NA the chap raced.

Reminds me of being at a managers meeting I had to attend many years ago, and all the idiots discussing how quick thier Cav SRi's were, and what they had done in them, and that took a whole evening in a pub!!!!

Yeah, I've had a Cav GSi as well. Was a nice car really, only thing it could have done with was the F28 6 speed box from the Turbo model. Screamed its tits off on the motorway.

The 2.0 16v 20XE was a very good engine for its day. Developed for motorsport, it wasn't very refined, but you can get quite a bit of power out of them when fitted with TBs and good management. They can be driven to the point of distruction and still carry on.

SBD kitted XE's find their way into Caterhams and such like.

Trouble is with them a lot of the GSi's have either rotted away or been chaved up to the 'max' and look apauling.

Nice to drive though and look quite nice. My old one...

I have an N/A and i could guarantee you i would p155 all over an SRI :D :mac1:

Good good. :D

Depends what SRi varient it was. They came with 4 different engines...this will probably bore everyone to death, but here goes. Firstly, the early ones with a 2.0 8v (20SEH), same engine as fitted to the 8v Astra GTEs. Capable engines, around 130bhp.

When they were facelifted in around 93, the GSi was dropped from the range and the C20XE was fitted (2.0 16v). Around 155bhp. Good engine and as Cavalier SRi's are quite light, I think that would have made a very decent chase, the NA Zeds are quite heavy, but yeah, they are still quicker. Off the mark though, I think they would be pretty even stevens.

Also, at the time, another 2.0 8v, similar to the early model, but less BHP and a Cat. Circa 115bhp.

When the C20XE finished production, the X20XEV was fitted (Ecotec lump), early ones were fabled with sensor problems and water pump failures. They were around 140bhp. Not as quick, but smoother than the early 16vs.

yes the 115 bhp only difference was the cam mine was the 20 seh.

0-60 book was 8.9 sec's but was great round corners. the c20xe like my bro had in his cally was 136 bhp with the long throw gearbox my cav had the short throw f16 box great for accelerating but my bro used to beat me at the top end (private runway driving) simply cos of the long ratio box.

now people are deffo asleep + am quite up with 1990's vaux spec's was a sad boy racer im affraid but now i go for the more refined cars lol

:rofl::rofl: wouldn't even waste my Optimax.........:rofl::rofl:

Must have been an X20XEV not C20XE, they produce that power, XE's pump out at the very least 150bhp

I've had loads of Vauxhalls. Only because I know how to rip them apart and rebuild them. :)

This is what I've just sold to make way for my Zed. It's a 94 Astra Convertible which I've fitted a 2.5 V6 Calibra engine into. Goes pretty well. Bored of it now. Was due to replace it about 3 years ago, but redundancy put pay to that idea.

720387_4_full.jpg

something to talk about tho being friendly and stuff

Agreed, we all had to start somewhere. Not everyone is born with a Zed stuck to their arse from the point of passing their driving test...lol  ;)

I'm long overdue for mine. Only a few weeks to wait though. :D
