Try adding the website address in to the Internet Options menu.

Are you running a firewall?

what do you mean

ive got norton internet security firewall

Oh great, Norton. First thing- get rid of all of your Norton products and buy others I've always had a ton of trouble with Noton stuff, the virus killer they make causes 100 times more problems than it ever solves (in my experience anyway, I know people who swear by Norton).

I'd advise right clikcing on the Norton icon in the bottom right of your screen, then de-activate the Norton firewall and try the sites again.

You can prove if Norton is the culprit by closing it down for a couple of minutes while you try to access the 'blocked' sites.

If you can get on them ok, you will need to get Norton to "Allow" the sites.

I use ZoneAlarm so can't tell you exactly where in Norton to look to do this though.

i can get onto my internet banking site, but as soon as i click log on, it throws me back to the unavailable page ???

same with the e-bay site

something wrong with my settings somewhere i think ???

Could be something blocking Java or ActiveX.

Logon screens tend to use these.

Check Internet Options/security (or whatever '98 called it).

You could set security to Low or Off as a test.

Some site must have Cookies enabled too.

After changing IE settings, close the browser down and open a new one.

still doesnt work

i will probably have to take it into the shop and let them sort it

as i dont want to mess with things i dont understand

thanks to all who tried to helpanyway

cheers lads

steve

Never take it to a shop...IMHO they are all fools. They charge you loads for messing with things they do not understand. My girlfriends dad brought his round after he took it to a shop. They charged him £93 and all they did was a defrag and didn't even solve his problem. .....

ive got norton antivirus, always using paypal and ebay, never had any probs logging onto theses sites.

im not much of a computer boffin but any probs i have had have usually turned out to be something quite simple. i have heard of people running "copies" of windows programs who have had various problems, and then on buying a proper copy of windows all probs have gone away! (im not suggesting your using dodgy copies by the way mate ;) )

hope you get sorted!

Could be ISP dodginess too... I run Win98SE at home, and the only problems I've had like this were when I couldn't access MSN and Yahoo profiles. It was something to do with NTL, I think - I manually stuck in a proxy IP and it sorted it.

My point? I don't know... if you're with NTL, that might be worth thinking about. You on broadband, dial-up, ADSL? Norton would have been my other guess, but that's been checked :(

Other thing to try would be a spyware scan - run AdAware or similar, see what it finds, and let it delete anything it doesn't like. Also, as takemetothepub says, make sure you have IE6 (click Help -> About Internet Explorer, and see what it says for version number).

I'd recommend against shops too - they'll either do nothing useful, or just tell you they have to reinstall the whole lot (which you could do yourself easily - I'm sure everyone here will help you on that if you're not sure what to do).

Good luck sorting it :) Interweb problems like this are annoying and can be hard to track down, esp with an older OS and something as unfriendly as Norton ( I use Sygate Personal Firewall - it's free, and works like a dream on Win98).

Occurs to me as well that it may be worth a quick check of startup items, in case there's anything dodgy that AdAware or Norton haven't caught. It's not very user-friendly, though :/ Click Start -> Run -> type "msconfig" , then the startup tab on the new window. That will bring up a big list of all the chaff that starts running when you log into windows. Look for anything spyware or virusy, but be careful not to untick any Norton entries. I've lost my link to lookup tables for startup items, but you can google any filenames you're not sure about, or ask in this thread.

It's alot of effort on a fairly long shot, though.

^WALL OF TEXT'D!!^

Summary: run AdAware scan, check IE version, avoid shop :)

I also use Norton and have no issues. It is likely the mixture of Windows 98 (Yuuuech) and the old version of IE that is causing your problems.

Open up Internet Explorer.

Click On Tools

Click On Options or Internet Options

Click the Advanced Tab

Then click on restore defaults

try that matey

get avant browser http://www.avant.com works well for me with options to block what u want or not..intergrated with explorer
