Yet again I am in need of your help guys.

My car is rusting in the area shown by the yellow circle in the pic below.

According to my body shop he thinks the water is getting in from above rather than below.

This is where I need help. I have tried chucking buckets of water over the car but cant seem to suss where its coming in from. Any ideas?

Thanks all:)

Justin

Mate, check that the plastic of the rear bumper isnt rubbing the paint work, if it is the water is getting through the chipped/scratched paint.

I think its coming in through the boot looking at where the rust is but maybe its possible for the water to get to the rust area from the t-tops?

that seems a funny place for water to get in. where is it sitting? in the inside of the wing?

the only place i can think of is the drain tube for the ariel, it goes through a big grommet behind the bumper, it would let a heap of water in if it was missing or dislodged...

Mines rusting in same place, im sure its where spray from the wheels sits between the bumper and the body and thus over time rots away

I will have to check out around the ariel and see whats what. For some reason only the outer skin of the wing is rusting and the inner skin is fine.

I have already had it sorted once when they cut all the rust out and welded in a new bit of metal but 3 months later its back again:(

I know looking at the wing from the inside that if any water did get in from above it would flow to that area.

that does seem strange that its on the outside..

i agree with Stephen check that out, but i would have thought it would have been obvious to the bodywork place second time round.

Justin this is a common place for UK cars to rot. Even had this piece cut out of mine when resprayed. Luke at Z centre does repair arches for just this problem

Thanks Mark,

I had a word with Luke about these bits. I think they are a good idea but the bodyshop I go to who are very good assures me that if they just fix it again then it will come back soon after as it did before. They seem sure that there is water getting to it some how.

I shouldn't if they cut out all the area that the new arches replace. Then stone chip paint and seal properly

Just re-igniting this thread as I too have an issue with rust in the place Justin has identified.

Quick story to explain where mine has come from:

I had no problems with rust anywhere on the car for the first three years of ownership (1991 UK model). Last June, I had a body kit fitted, which, as most body kits do, includes a replacement rear bumper.

Now, for those who are aware of how a standard bumper is attached, there are about 10 bolts which hold the long-end of the bumper into the body. These bolts go though holes in the chassis under the lights, and have rubber washers on them to seal the joint.

My rust has appeared as a result of my after-market bumper being attached as follows:

- 5 self tappers through from the inside into the fibre-glass.

- No attempt to cover or fill the remaining unused holes

- No re-use of the rubber washers either.

....consequently, everytime it rains, even lightly, water comes in the boot and fills up the boot tray on either side, it then overfills into the rear arches, whereupon the water has nowhere to drain, and rots through!!

So having spent a considerable amount of money on the kit fitmenting and a respray, you can imagine how pi55ed off I was to discover that the bodyshops incompetance has caused another few hundred pounds worth of damage!

Anyway, my advise is to those you are having new rear bumpers fitted, makes sure all the fixing holes are either covered, filled, or sealed in some form to stop the water getting in, or else you'll be discovering how good (or bad in my case) the customer service is of the company you've used!!

Simon.
