Isn't it strange how so many Zed owners (all performance cars in fact) are either IT or forces. Guess its fortunate I'm both! Got another microsoft exam tuesday so as you can see I'm studying hard and not spending all weekend on the forum.

Thats interesting, a mate who has gone outside who used to do the same as me is doing IT project managing now. He advised me to get the ITIL exam.Know what you mean by the 'paper MCSE' syndrome. There are people who I work with who have it and don't know their arse from their elbow. They went on 3 week bootcamps and passed the exam through cramming. I'm being very careful to make sure I can do as much as possible practically and not just on paper. I've commandered a room full of computers for 'training purposes'! and reguarly try to brake the networks we work on (not hard!).

I've got a lot more respect for the CCNA than the microsoft exams. I think it would be very hard to 'cram' that and pass it. It was a 85% pass rate and you had to know what you were doing practically, not just theoretically. I want to carry on down this route when I leave. More of a niche if I can get really good at it. I've got some good experience so hopefully with the qualifications it will get me a good job.

If it all goes pair shaped I'll cry as I've been working my arse off all year to get these qualifications.

Now there's a good job!! Was it anything like it sounds?

Not really, unless games are your lifeblood (like they were for me for far too long). 80 - 120 hours per week with no overtime and you usually get stiffed on any bonus. Theoretically, I should have been able to retire after I made "G-Police" on PSX (PS1) but I only ended up with a poxy £4k bonus after 9 months of working evenings and weekends :( Having said that, I've got a mate who missed out on a £300k bonus after he made "Banjo Kazooie" 'cos he changed company prematurely.

I work on the Railways? But when you think about it it is IT and the Forces>>>

I.T. = Intermittent Transportation..

The Forces = "Due to unknown FORCES the train has been cancelled"..

I used to be a video game developer, but now I'm just a lowly database engineer.
I'm still in that lark! Can I ask what made you make the switch? From your last post it sounds like the bad ol' burnout (not the Acclaim variety ;))

Guess it must be hard meeting birds when yer in the game testing dev side a things..

I used to work in IT for a video games publisher (best waste of time whilst getting a wage i've done  ), then our office got made redundant in 2000 so now i've turned me hand to farming mushrooms!!

must be a magic job to be in especially autum/winter time ;)

And yes you're right - the Apache is an awesome weapons platform and a very capable attack helicopter.

Hmmm????? Not convinced!!

I work on the Apache and Lynx Mk 7 helicopter. Engines, transmission, flying controls and airframes. Can get boring at times, usually involves sweaping the hangar umpteen times a day because we're waiting on spares! ;)

You're looking at it from a maintenance point of view not an operational useage

Strangely, not burnout.

After I was made redundant from Sony/Psygnosis in Stroud, I moved to a company in Fareham, Portsmouth (Climax - you probably know them, or work for them). 6 months later and the project I was working on got cancelled (Roswell Conspiracies), due to the demise of the Dreamcast, and I was made redundant again. So then I started at Data Design Interactive and made a game for Lego (Rock Raiders). 6 months later, the follow-up project got canned - and so did I (again).

Since then, I've been very picky about which games company I work for - there are a lot of tin-pot outfits out there, and I don't want to work for EA or Sony (again). I've been for numerous interviews and had many offers, but none have met my expectations yet so I'm still looking (and doing other stuff in the meantime).

I'm not with Climax personally though I did get an offer at one point - seems like everyone in the industry has either worked for them at some time or knows at least one person who has :D If you were on Roswell then you probably worked with a mate of mine who was on that for a while too.

The last few years has been pretty mercenary for smaller studios, if they don't get eaten by the big names they've generally been going under. Until last year I was with a developer owned by Titus - when they choked on their own frogs legs we were left to get a tribunal verdict of constructive dismissal but still missed out on 2 months wages and redundancy :headvswal

the apache is a nice hel, but... be even better if the fkn yanks would give you the full flight and targeting software and not the cutdown shit that came with it..

its a fact and part of amercan law that all us military grade software and cryptography software cannot be supplied in its full version to any country outside the u.s in its full operational state. did you know that the uk longbow doesnt have half the operational capability that the u.s version does.

what amazed me was the recognition system used in iraq on the tanks.. it was supposed to be some super transmission system,, fkn wasnt. my cousin came back after having his hand shot up( tank gunner) he told me that all it was , was a box with foil inside to reflect the heat.. thats it!!

and also that the nice new secret winchester armour stood upto everything thrown at it and the yanks were trying to get plates from the uk stores out there.. he said , they took 12 abrahms out and they all came back shot to shit.. and the britsh just had mild denting and shot dust marks..

but the funniest thing he saw was the fact that the b1 stealth showed up on the new aa systems.. go figure!

when i was working for ibm i had to leave all my software behind as the law wouldnt let me bring it here.. then i got to ibm uk only to find i couldnt do half the shit i used to because the software was so cutdown it wasnt worth the effort!!

Actually saw the phots on your website getting your knee down (think it was you I've looked at so many recently). Very nice

Dave

I work at a plastics injection moulding company.

I have only started at this place recently due to previously getting made redundant.

I have done some developement work and many new mould trials.

When I tell people I am a toolsetter they look at me blank then I just say I'm a technician (I am actually I suppose)

p.s. I am just a turd on the shop floor though  :p

I like my job but I think the manufacturing industry is going down the pan in this country (its all going to china)

I dont know what else to do though? PM me with any reasonable offers.. ;)
