Hi Everyone,

Where shall I start...OK I see a ad for a 300zx L reg uk spec auto TT in black (Dream car), the seller wanted 3500 for it. WOW im thinking perfect, I phone the seller who tells me that the car is in mint condition and has FSH by Nissan. The seller is based in Exeter and im based in Crawley west sussex about 225 miles away. After specking to the seller on the phone for a week I arrange to get a train over to pick the car up, at this stage its like Christmas for me......I get of the train and meet the guy at the station and I see the nose of the car in the car park (I fell in love with it), took it for a test drive which went all good, I aslo printed your buying guide which I took with me and the boost and everything else was good..."Do you like the car the seller asked me" I yes yes with a big grin on my face looking forward to the drive home, the seller and I went to fill her up with petrol and do some final check this it were it goes all wrong, please read on....The seller for some reson opens the water cooler tap where a load of coolent and water starts fizzing out, at this stage my heart falls to the floor and I think to myself WHY ME!!!!, then the seller started putting water in the top up tank starts the engine then it all starts gushing out again....I told the seller that I dont want to purchase the car and I want me money back, the seller gave me my money back including the £96.00 train fair and I set back home on the train. So in all I spent 8 hours traveling for nothing and I have also been put of the 300ZX, can anyone out there convince not to be put of the 300ZX..

One more thing is the AIRCON in the 300ZX auctal aircon with a aircon belt ect the reson I ask is that the aircon set on 10 was not blowing out cold air..

Thanks for you time

Matt

Hi, and Welcome :)

Yeh the Aircon is full Aicron, with digital climate control. If its not pumping out cold air usually means it just need regassing.

Why did the seller open the Coolant resevoir, when hot ??...naturally it with fizz and overflow (thats normal when hot from the pressure).

Should of asked someone from on here to meet you ;)

That what I thought, I dont think the seller knows what he was doing. Well I have 4K ready to spend on a 300ZX where is a good please to start looking for a good one!

Thanks guy when I go to look at the next one, would it be ok for someone to come with me!

Blimey Matt -

That's bloody awful. Don't throw in the towel just yet, it sounds as if this is the first 300 you looked at. My advise is to have a look at as many as you can. When I bought mine (back in 2001) I saw about a dozen or so 300's, all were invariably sheds and poorly maintained. But then I found what I was looking for - a well maintained, recently imported TT in silver. I paid slightly over the odds for it but it was worth it.

These cars are notorious for going tits-up IF they are NOT maintained properly. And by that I mean regular oil changes, filter changes, lube jobs, etc. Remember, these cars are now coming up to 12-15 years old and they are allowed to go wrong. It used to be a £40k sports car when it first came out so the mechanics of the car are solid.

What you need to do is not to buy the first car you come across - however tempting it may be. If at all possible, get a knowledgeable persone to come along and go over the car. Get the AA to do an inspection - you pay for it but at the end of the day it is a relative measure of peace-of-mind. Once you've decided to buy one immediately take it to a specialist and have the cambelt changed (along with the ancillary belts), change the spark plugs, oil filter, fuel filter, etc (ie, have it serviced) and give everything a good going over. It is important you get the car running properly before you consider doing any modifications to it (if indeed that is the way you want to go).

Better yet, have a look in the Cars for Sale section to see if there are any member cars up for sale that meet your criteria. Especially if the car belongs to a longterm member you can be relatively sure it has been looked after properly.

In the meantime, all the best with your car hunting!

Dan

It happens mate. I travelled the same distance twice only to be messed around but I wanted a zed because they are sooo much fun.

Don't be put off. Ask the guys here for advice on absolutely anything, what they don't know, probably aint worth knowing.

Rest assured that if you buy a zed, and subscribe here, the guys here can help you fix anything...

There are always good zeds here for sale...subscribe and check out the for sale ads..

The temp gauge was showing very hot about a third up on the gauge. The manual states normal should be in the middle!

A good place to look would be the For Sale section on here, if it's a long standing member, you can look through their old posts to see what problems, if any, they have had!

Probably NOT a good idea to come across any car, as the current owner might not be very happy with you, save that sort of thing for a private moment ;)

Maby so but no one in there right mind should remove the rad cap when the motor is hot!! Lucky the bloke still has skin on his hands and face :)

Thats not good mate , as the stock guage is crap and normally stays halfway untill its already overheated then the stock guage moves up so looks like it was overheating mate. Obviously that can lead to warping heads ect ect ..glad u gave it a miss , but keep looking there is loads of nice examples out there just few and far between.

Just clearing something up - you mean 2 thirds up?

Matt - as you probably already know, there's always a reason why a car is for sale. The trick is to find the reason(s), figure out the cost of repair/replacement, and negotiate from there.

Anyway, I don't want you to buy one. These cars are special. They are one of the hidden gems of motoring. We can't have everybody driving around in them, they'll loose their exotic status. Keep them a secret is what I say...

I think the buying guide will cover you for the health of a uk or a jap TT.

You sure you couldn't be tempted by a nice black non-turbo? Mine is for sale. A good healthy runner with a brand new MOT and recent 60k service. Details in the cars for sale forum. Would leave you with plently cash from your budget for mods or petrol!

David

Thanks for the offer mate, but I really want a Turbo!
